Shelf Rd Campground Closure Oct 2023 - Feb 2024.

CAMPGROUND CLOSURE ALERT FOR SAND GULCH CAMPGROUND:

The Sand Gulch campground will be closed starting Oct. 30, 2023 when the Royal Gorge Field Office begins breaking ground on long-awaited site renovations and a new campsite loop expansion project. The construction project is scheduled to last through February 2024.
The campground, day use parking areas, and vault toilet will be closed during this time. Would-be campers are encouraged to reserve a campsite at The Bank instead. Access to crag trails and climbing walls will remain open. However, users are cautioned to stay clear of construction equipment, as construction work will continue through the weekends. Climbers may still use the parking lot near the wooden corrals and then hike in for day use.
This construction project will add a new campsite loop, new group sites, two additional vault toilets, a campground host site, and expand the existing day use parking area to accommodate more vehicles.
We appreciate your patience as this necessary and exciting project occurs this fall and winter.

Following a significant expansion project, the Sand Gulch Campground in Fremont County has officially reopened with double the number of sites, quadruple the parking spaces, quintupled restrooms, and improved amenities throughout.
