Portland climbing in the rain ?

Is there anything local (within an hourish) to the Portland area that stays dry or dries out reallly fast during the rainy season?

…or are the options limited to Bend?

I’d really like to get out and touch some real rock this weekend but unsure if I have time to make the trip South. Unless someone is stoked on Trout Creek, I may carve out time to check out that place. Heard it’s sick.

I know this question has been asked before but it never hurts to get another check-in from folks!

Jungle Wall at Broughton has been my go-to. A few other walls stay relatively dry - Portland Rock Climbs claims dry routes on the North Face, Red Wall, and Bat Wall but ymmv.

Mordor Wall at Ozone will stay dry for a little bit but ends up seeping after a while.

Madrone is S/SW facing so dries out quickly; some routes may be overhanging enough to stay dry but haven't reviewed personally. (But Madrone also closes in Feb so...)

Some minor parts of Wall of Shadows at Rocky Butte.

Head east in the Gorge, OH8 and the surrounding piles aren't great but they're there.

As for this weekend, Fri looks okay and Sun looks slightly better (less forecasted rain the preceding day). I think you'd find luck at most of the local crags this weekend, but I may end up eating my words after I go out tomorrow...

Thanks for the detailed reply! I really appreciate it! New here for sure and used to just chasing fair weather.

(And woop yeah, I could have searched but I was laying in bed frustrated at the forecast hahaha)

I've only been here 2 years, so I'm still learning the art of reading the weather - sometimes you just have to be willing to go to the crag and be disappointed.

I spent quite a few December, Jan and Feb days over the last two years at Broughton - cold, wishing for sun, but mostly dry. You'll start to recognize the same cast of hardened climbers!

In the Gorge, I forgot to add Horsethief Butte - kinda a hybrid highball boulder / TR / gear spot. Windy but is often drier.

I wouldn't recommend Carver Cliff during this season.  I went there a lot over the summer and last I went there (about 3 weeks ago) it was a total moss farm.  a lot of the routes were starting to get pretty slick and it didn't take long!  I imagine they will stay this way until around June.  Hope I'm wrong though!

Here’s Carver on Fri afternoon, after a late Thursday rain storm and a week of on-and-off again rain:

Pretty much done since it only gets AM sun for the most part.

Madrone was slightly drier; saw about 6 other climbers out there - still a few seepy wet spots but beggars can’t be choosers.

ETA: Will be trying both again on Saturday - weather says dry M, Tu, Th and F (but minor rain on Wed) so we'll see if that dry spell has any impact.

hope y'all are getting some. last saturday was fantastic after several days of good weather to dry out the rock. looks like this whole thanksgiving break will be similar - go out and get ya some in case it turns out to be the last time in 2023!

Looks like Portland winter is starting proper soon. Thanks for the beta. I wasn't strong enough to consider a lot of these climbs this time last year, but I like the potential of getting my hands on rock more regularly these rainy months

Hi all, I'm curious whether anyone thinks Farside / Dropzone would be climbable next week if temps are in the 50s and it hasn't rained in 2-3 days? (I.e., Sunday or Thursday)? If not that crag, maybe Ozone or OH8 as mentioned above?

Thanks!

Went to Ozone today and the rock was all pretty dry. The wind was rippin pretty good, but still manageable.
