Shannon Stegg, 1959-2022

A giant of southern climbing passed away earlier this month.  Shannon Stegg was a prolific first ascentionist at crags throughout the southeast; anyone who has climbed at Sand Rock, Tallulah Gorge, Laurel Knob and numerous other areas has most likely been on a Stegg FA.  Shannon will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life for Shannon Stegg will be held at Tallulah Gorge State Park on January 7 at noon.  Details can be found at this memorial page:

I offer my sincere condolences to Shannon’s Family and Friends.

Thank you for sharing. I thought I had never met Shannon, but after looking through the pictures, I'm 90% sure I played hockey with him sometime around 2000 or 2001. It looks like he and I also went to the same high school, albeit a few decades apart. Small world. My condolences to his friends and family.

My entry into climbing decades ago was in the southeast. All those places were my old stomping grounds, and Shannon’s name was obviously prolific in the guidebooks.

Condolences to friends and family. Hopefully some solace can be found in the fact that Shannon continues to have an impact on multiple generations of climbers.

In April 1989, I was in Atlanta on business. Shannon took me out to Talullah Gorge for a day. He and Curtis Glass took me up to Lookout Mountain, above Lafayette GA, on another. Shannon was super strong and a good guide. I’m grateful to have had that opportunity to climb with him and sorry that we didn’t get out again. 

I only met Shannon once 9 years ago; at a local North Carolina crag.  He took a real interest in me as a climber and fellow human.  We bonded over stories about alpine climbing in the western United States.

Shannon and his friends (Jody J) ribbed me when I was runnout on a sand bagged 5.9.  It was all in good fun.

Stego was kind, humble and a joy to be around.

Here’s to a life well lived!

Well, I just heard today about Shannon's passing.  We had a grand adventure once-up-a-time out at the Big Green and Laurel Knob .  One of the most memorable climbing trips of my life.  Condolences to his friends and family. RIP Shannon. A life well lived indeed!
