Here's a picture of the road going under the railroad tracks on the way to the Saddle Boulder/Coldstream.

I've never attempted the other, questionably legal way to get around this, so am not sure of road conditions further in.

How long does that walk take? Are you in the tunnel in the dark for most of it?

I'd probably do that with a sport climbing pack for going to cold stream, but I wouldn't want to hike in the amount of pads I'd like to bring. I guess if you have a large group it wouldn't be too bad.

anyone know the status of the road to lower castle peak?

Totally free of snow. Road is maybe a bit worse than last year. I wouldn't take my Subaru up it personally.

Anyone know if it possible/advisable right now to drive (a truck) to the parking area right by the saddle boulder?  (Option 2 in the MP approach beta.)

You can get to the Saddles with a truck but I think those directions are outdated. They seem to take you past the parking for main Cold Stream climbing area, but the road just past the parking is fucked.

Shortly after the tunnel (once you are moving away from the train tracks), there is a hairpin right turn that heads uphill, to the north then heading west. This will take you to the Saddles. My Gaia app identifies this as Hewlett Road. Please try to avoid wrong turns onto private roads/property out there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
