Camping around Wine Spires

Hello,

We’re looking at a few routes in the Wine Spires and Silverstar area. Thinking about carrying overnight packs in then day tripping up various routes. It seems like most people just hike in the 2.5 miles each day to do a climb then back to their car. Does anyone have experience camping up there? Worth carrying the overnight load or just day trip it and go car camp somewhere in Mazama area?

Thanks in advance!

I think making a base camp up in Burgundy Col is the way to go, for sure. There are also some campsites lower down on both approach aspects. If you camp on the bench on the west side, there's a spring there and it's an easier hike up than the whole approach daily. It's a healthy amount of vert in 2.5 miles. Can't beat the views up there, either.

I’ve only been up there in springtime for silver star but the west side bench camp around 6400ft seemed like it would make a great base camp. Burgundy col was more like rock rings bivy style (everything was snow covered and windy when I was there tho, it’s probably quite pleasant now). Either base camp sounds like a great way to climb up there, super pretty area

In my experience there are quite a few people who camp at bench camp.  I have stayed at Bench camp before and I think it is worth it for multiple days of climbing up there.

I've climbed a few spires up there and camped at the bench.  There is a spot to hang food and water source - pretty plush camp, honestly.

The water spring (48.55484, -120.60443) is on climbers left of bench camp (48.55297, -120.60383)

The creek shown on Gaia to climbers right is dry.

The West Ridge of Paisano is a great route with awesome crack climbing.

Mind the goats. They are plentiful, but not unfriendly. They want to lick the salt from your urine. Pee away from camp and they will go get it. They will stare at you expectingly until you do.

Please pee on slabs and not gravel so they don’t get rocks in their stomach. It’s bad for them.

Thank you everyone. Super helpful info and I appreciate it.

I’m familiar with the goats. Pretty wild they have been helicopter transporting then out of the Olympic Peninsula.

Here’s to hoping the Sourdough fire doesn’t get too bad (not just for climbing conditions but for everyone involved with the management of the fire).
