Mid May Ice in Sierra?
|
|
Please point me to an existing thread if one exists Anyone know of any ice routes that might be in around mid May in the sierra? |

With the current high temperatures, and this weekend‘s upcoming heat wave, I doubt there will be anything still in shape. The high temperatures recently make it even hard to ski, as the window for cold snow is so short with inversions at higher elevations. Fortunately colder temperatures are forecast for next week |

gotcha. I havent climbed in the range before. Any guesses on alpine rock conditions at that time? |

People have definitely climbed the death couloir on Morrison in May. Just keep your fingers crossed for favorable weather conditions. |

Not the Sierra ,but take a look at the Hotlum/Bolam Ridge on Mt.Shasta . |

FYI if you are pedantic like me sierra = mountain range so it's the Sierra. |

Most of the autumn ice is firmly under snow. Skied past the Death Couloir on Weds and it is nowhere near formed (have climbed it in June so there is hope). Fingers crossed for Ice Nine this fall with the heavy snowpack! |

whats up y'all? I'm moving to Reno in july and am keen to chase alpine ice upon arrival. rock is cool too, so a mixed route would be enjoyable but I definitely prefer being scared while freezing my nads off in north facing couloirs to being all tan and buff and shirtless in the warm sun. anyway. If that interests you and you're looking for a partner holler at me. I'm moving from new hampshire where i spend most of my free time chasing rock and ice. |
