Known scammers’ names, aliases, email addresses, Venmos, phone numbers, etc.

Between people on the FS forum and shady websites popping up everywhere, this is sorely needed.

What if you could pay to keep your item at the top?

You used to remind the teacher to give everyone homework, huh?

There needs to be a database of these scammers.
I was scammed and will never buy anything off here again.
I am a reputable buyer and community member.
Moderators need to do something about this issue.

How are threads made sticky? Seemed like any admin could do it like the second date and free threads. Is that not the case?

Also, agreed. A sticky thread with a list of scammers is needed.

I agree that a admin could do it in 20 seconds.  Admins…..  Why not have this??

What if there was a fee to post an item? That would probably deter the scammers.

I was also scammed so I feel ya. The problem I see is that as soon as they get caught, they disappear and re-emerge with new names and emails. I’m not against the idea I just don’t know how effective it’ll be.

At the very least there needs to be a Sticky with some tips to avoid getting scammed. Here is an example from pinkbike.com:

Pinkbike Buy/Sell Safety & Tips

Another option is to require a certain number of minimum forum posts before you are allowed to post onto the For Sale forum, I think this is how it is on the TGR forums? Not sure if this would protect the people getting scammed when a scammer responds to a WTB post though.

I personally will only use Paypal Goods & Services to pay for items, this gives you the protection you need. I don't actually understand why people will do transactions on the internet with random strangers without it.

We all want to believe we are a tight knit community that only wants to help each other.

We, myself included choose to believe people are honest and upstanding members of this community.
It’s ok,  I believe karma is real and is usually paid in multiples.

We have created a sticky post here: https://www.mountainproject.com/forum/topic/123717568/avoiding-scammers

Question for the community - should sellers be required to include a handwritten note in photos of their items that includes their MP username and a date? This may help to reduce the possibility that the seller is using someone else's photos of popular gear that they don't actually possess.

Required? No, perusing someone's MP profile is usually proof enough that they're real. Encouraged? Yes, especially for newer/less active profiles.

Maybe required if account is less than x days/months old?

I think this is a good idea and should be encouraged.
I admit that I am too trusting and need to take more steps to prevent this from being an issue.
