Yeah this is what I ended up buying. They're nice and stretchy and they fit everything I need them to.

I have another convert!

Eddie Bauer FIrst Ascent Guide Pro shorts. Cheap, durable, super stretchy and they will last for years of abuse

This is my go-to short, but recently I've been wearing these columbias I bought at the outlet. Stretchy, zippered pockets, 8" inseam, breathable. Plus they're like $25

Mountain bike baggy shorts, usually available generic and cheap on Amazon are really good. Most have a removable liner or no butt pads at all.

I can’t bring myself to spend real money on shorts, and most cost almost as much as pants. That plus scabby knees from the bike, I tend to climb in pants, even in warm weather. It’s not a big deal.

My guess is you haven’t climbed at the Gunks when it’s 90 and humid with 0% cloud cover lol

I’ve been wearing the HyperActive shorts (original version, not 2.0) from NFQ. I like them because they have two zippered pockets big enough for that size of phone, a built-in spandex liner, and a very good amount of stretch. They’re good for gym climbing, yoga, and lifting (lots of flexibility for deep squats). They’re probably a bit thin for outdoor use, especially if you have to move through a lot of undergrowth to reach the crag. They’re about $30ish and come in various colors and patterns.

I most certainly have. I probably wore shorts because most of what I climbed was pretty easy. If I’m going for it, pants give me a mental edge, I don’t know why.

I've honestly been incredibly impressed with the wrangler technical pants from Walmart.  The material is a little on the thick side but it's surprisingly durable and breathable and are very stretchy. The cargo pockets are just barely big enough for my phablet.  At $20 a pop you could turn them into shorts with a care (I think they also have shorts but not sure they have the same pocket).  Also really like that it's a rivet type button on the fly so I never have to worry about my gut popping it and then having to hike out with pants falling down.

The thing about these is that you kind of need a belt. This one is perfect and doesn't interfere with a harness.

No doubt! My wife once bought me some of those awesome Marmot climbing pants with the elastic waistband. No way in hell were those things going to stay on my skinny ass. They were gracious and let me trade them in but it's an issue for sure.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
