For anyone that has hiked or climbed in the burn areas, how is the ash compared to last year. I am contemplating bringing the dogs for some hiking but I won't bring them if the ash is still pretty heavy.

Who has been to the burned areas near Big Sleep or Little Shuteye Pass?

I was there yesterday and its pretty green in the burn areas but the trees are a little scary on a windy day.

I used to always bring my dogs climbing in Shuteye, but I don't anymore because of the ash and other hazards. YMMV as it is certainly a subjective risk assessment/comfort level. My dogs are my children, so I am perhaps a bit overly cautious. I personally go elsewhere for dog hiking and avoid the burned areas.

Just to build on Mike's comment, the ash is better than last year and there are new plants growing, but it's certainly not yet recovered. I fell into a hidden burned-out tree stump hole just the other day. I think its still a bit too "ashy" for dogs still myself. I guess the approach up to Crocodile, (western slope of Shuteye pass trail) isn't too bad, but the eastern slope heading up to Minerva etc. is quite bad. The burned tree husks that Mike mentioned are no joke. You want to move quickly and observantly though many areas as those trees are going to fall over one day. Careful where you park your car. Be careful out there!

Thank you for the updates. I'll make sure to leave the pups at home. I too don't need them getting injured.

QUESTION 2 since I got some good responses. Is the road into Big Sleep from Minarets Road clear of trees and good enough for passenger cars like subaraus or stick with the 4x4 for now?

Thanks again.

I cant leave mine at home so he goes, but he is also pretty good at rinsing himself off in any stream he can find. There is plenty of green on that side of the ridge. Like Corey said, be careful where you park. 2wd with a little clearance is fine, the road has been cleared from the Cascadel side. i noticed the gate was open from Minarets side but i did not drive it, I cant say if its clear or not.

I have a friend inquiring about bringing his passenger car in so I'll have to scout the minarets side once we come in via cascadel side/entrance.

Mike- looking dry and good!  Is the road to electric eagle clear, 6s66 I think? Or did you hike down from the other side (Ie.Suteye peak)? I

Are most of the dirt roads open or are there still closures in effect ?

Hi James,
I called the Bass Lake Ranger district after reading all the forest closure orders and the linked documents/maps.

She said that the roads are open and dispersed camping is good to go. Get your free online fire permit for stoves etc.

The campgounds such as Gaggs etc are closed and you cannot stay there.

Thanks for the fire permit reminder, Randy. I just got one online from this link:

https://permit.preventwildfiresca.org/

We don’t build campfires, but do use a portable gas stove.

We climbed at Shuteye Creek Area a couple weeks ago. The road from Minarets/Mammoth Pool road was fully open and 6s66 was passable with a 4WD. The climbing was great, but the camping is totally charred. We camped there, but only because there was no wind. Camping under those burned out trees in any amount of wind would be scary.  If you're going to climb at Electric Eagle, I recommend camping at the crag at the Climbers Camp - that's the only safe place (and with totally epic views!)
