Good rain day walls/crags

My boyfriend and I are flying into Denver next week, climbing Wednesday through Saturday. We were planning to hit up Clear Creek but it's looking like it might rain. Does anyone have any suggestions for rainy day climbing areas and walls? We sport climb 10s and lower 11s. Might be willing to do some super easy trad (just getting into it). Willing to travel a bit to get some climbing in. Thanks!!

Rain? Never heard of it

Short rains in the afternoon are common here in summer. If you climb in the morning you have a good chance of avoiding them.

This is the app I'm looking at for weather.

If there is a light rain, Wall of Justice stays mostly dry and has lots of fixed draws, so very little commitment. Hanging Judge is excellent in the range you’re looking for. Plus, it’s a cool spot to hang out during a storm (he says from experience).

Beautiful dry day out here in Colorado. Doesn't rain anymore huh? Lol

This thread is absolutely hilarious.

lauren, to answer your question: we Coloradans don’t get much sustained rain, so we don’t really go out climbing on a rainy day like today. Or this weekend, I guess. Rain here is usually limited to fast-drying afternoon storms, which are pretty easy to plan around. Sorry for the rotten luck on your trip - this is a pretty unusual weather pattern.

Haha thats true, I just thought the comments were funny!! No worries though, we still got 2 solid days in this week :)

I have to echo how funny this thread this. I was about to post asking folks what to look for after this snow storm, but this "unusual weather pattern" is kinda the new norm of who knows whatever happens, happens. I love having the experience of fire warnings with unprecedented snow fall in May. Loving it.

Seriously? I could really do without fire weather

Well, there are alternatives. Here's a typical Spring forecast for the Pisgah National Rainforest, for example:

And why is this useful right now? NC to CO is much to cross over. Plus the east coast is going through a heat wave. Of course there are alternatives. I relate to the originally poster but I drove out to Denver and will be here through this snow storm. Would you like a comparison of the rainforests in Washington as well?

Those that say this weather is so unusual have not lived here very long or have bad memories. Sure, it’s not typical late May weather. But, it’s not unusual to have several days of rain/snow/sleet in May. The record for the last measurable snow around Denver is well into June.

Wasn't responding to the OP. That should've been pretty obvious by how I responded to a specific quote. Better question: Why is someone from IL responding on a CO forum?

My house in Broomfield CO has been threatened by fire several times this year alone. That sucks but unfortunately it's the price you pay for living in a dry (yes I know it's getting dryer) climate. If it is too much of a risk then there are alternatives.

To the OP: Sucks that the weather soured out on your trip. Same thing happened to us several years back before we moved here; I think it snowed almost 2 feet on that trip and even the power was out in most places.

Oh I don’t know about that, I don’t think it’s done this in the 50 years I’ve been here (snowed this many inches in the city this late in May.  There’s no way you’ve seen 12” in Golden on May 21).  I’ve skied fresh deep powder in mid May, but haven’t seen this in the city.   The news also predicted record low temps, but not sure if it happened.

I’m responding because I’m out here on a trip too and was seeking beta of where to go.

I haven’t found reliable info for conditions in most crags areas and have ended up trapped in Denver for the time being.

I lived in central Oregon for 2 years and I empathize with the fire concerns.

Unforchunately the response you originally had was not obvious. But now it’s stated.

Well, I said there are two reasons why people think this weather is unusual. One is because they haven’t lived here very long. Can you remember the other?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
