It can be absolutely perfect to really hot to snowy and cold.  May is a bit unpredictable.  Late May is definitely more predictable than early May.

Just a reminder that the old highway with most of the free camping is closed annually until June. So camping pressure can be higher before it opens. Besides a major winter storm, it's easy to find shade or sun so the temperatures are pretty easy to deal with. You can also go up or down in elevation to modulate heat/cold.

Many of the lower crags are snow free and warm enough to climb!
