Piastri would be brilliant BUT the priority this year must be car development so he'd probably be out, I'd go for their test drivers (primarily Fittipaldi) or Hulkenberg. |

So nobody will miss Mazepin, who's going to drive around near the back this year? Guess it's coming down to whoever the new sponser will be. |

So it's Magnussen, I'll admit he wasn't on my radar! Plenty of experience, fast enough, level headed, test driver and knows the team so not a bad pick for a whole season of development. Edit later; either Mercedes have produced a masterpiece or a dog! Todays minimalistic side boxes compared with the ugly monstrosities on the Ferrari shows all their work on heat exchangers and shoving the cooling system on top of the engine and allows the aero guys a free hand. On the other hand the Ferrari can't need openings that big to cool the engine so perhaps they've got something else up their sleeves. |

On my bike trip to Italy last October,I visited the Ferrari Museums in Modena and Maranello for the second time & will do so again . Maranello has the most Formula 1 cars & engines on display & until your hired to drive by a team you will never get closer to one . |

I was probably the most experienced for Silverstone driver there anyway, the year before I was lead mechanic for a FF race school based there so every day drove each car before the customers got them. Like most formula cars I don't get on real well, I'm just too big to get to work, size 11 feet are a real problem! I moved to a team running Camaros which was more my kind of car even though it was a fat monster and uncompetive on most Euro tracks. |

Sounds like Mercedes might be in trouble. I know everyone is like "classic Mercedes sandbagging" but past year's statements haven't been as blunt as Lewis's this year. |

Daniel Cwrote: Pre-season times (and driver/team statements have always been meaningless, 2017, 18 and 19 Ferrari dominated, 2020 Bottas fastest and Hamilton fifth nearly a second back. It's testing to see if the computer models match the wind tunnel/simulator models and the package reliability. The teams with the better intellectual resources and drivers then proceed to win. Magnussens time on the second day says it all really, a middle-talented driver that hadn't driven a F1 car for two years and a couple of hours practice crushes the opposition with an underfunded team that's always fielded dog-slow cars. It might be a film script dream but against the three top teams I doubt it! Next week we shall see:-) |

David Housewrote: Yeah, I agree. The show is certainly entertaining, but the ramping up of drama sometimes feels like the only thing happening. The races go by so quickly, and it's always about some rivalry, rather than letting the race unfold as it did in reality. And the Christian vs Toto stuff is entertaining, but it seemed to take over the series. Anyhow, like you, I can't wait for the real racing to begin... |

The elephant in the room is how well the teams get on with whatever settings Pirelli come up with and who got it right with the wheel area aerodynamics, the right strategy to have a third set of C3's if needed in the race is going to be important. I expect Verstappen and Leclerc to take each other out on the first lap anyway! |

Wow, after two rounds of practice in Bahrain Ferrari is looking strong, McLaren is looking terrible and Mercedes has some work to do! Nice to see Haas in the midfield after their early sponsor/driver drama, we'll see if they can keep it there. The thought of Mick Schumacher in a Haas finishing ahead of Hamilton is hard to wrap my head around! Can't wait to see where the grid lines up after qualifying. |

Mercedes looks like they are in deep, deep trouble. They have like 2 or 3 races to catch-up with Ferrari and redbull before their title chances are over. |

I don’t think Merc is in any trouble at all, GR was only .5 off the lead in FP2 and I have a hunch that they haven’t shook all the sand out of Lewis’s car yet, he was routinely down 20kph on the straights. Merc has always been about making the car work the whole season, and I wouldn’t be shocked if they used both FP this weekend to run more simulations for car development instead of a full shakedown for the race this Sunday. Remember that Merc had the least amount of wind tunnel time in the off-season, so it makes sense they might be a little behind early in the season. They might not be fighting for the win, but I’m willing to bet there is a Merc on the podium Sunday. |

Fp3 merc has as I suspected fixed the stability and almost all porpoising issues, but still down 10kpm top speed. Slow button off for quali and we get to hear Toto go on about how they never expected the team to fix these major issues so fast, as is tradition at this point. There is a small possibility that they dropped the ball with the new fuel regs, since all the merc teams are down in the speed trap, we’ll see soon! |
