I keep reading soft sandstone in Sedona, how much softer than the Moab crags?

completely depends on which moab routes/crags and which sedona routes/crags.  some of the sedona sandstone is pretty decent, but some of it is pretty dicey.

Any single pitch crags. MY 2-year-old and 6-year-old kids are with me. One of us needs to be on the ground at all times. (Sedona) The sport of trad. If so, which o you recommend?

I plan on buying. guidebook on arrival if we go?

As Slim wrote, some of the sandstone in Sedona is very hard, and some is crap; most of it is somewhere in between.

If you are seeking a single pitch crag with minimal scrambling, relatively solid rock, several routes, and plenty of room for non-climbers to hang, I would recommend sporting it at The Planetarium. Your kids should be able to stand away from any potential rock fall. IMHO avoid Lunar Lander (warm up on Space Cowboy's instead) & be sure to get on Mission to Mars.

Not too far away from there is the Church Wall with several routes. However it the rock there is not quite as solid, it sometimes requires a bit of scrambling, and many routes require traversing &/or standing on a narrow limestone ledge.

HTH!

oooh, that's going to be tough with the kids. in general, the climbing (at least that i am familiar with) down there is sub-optimal to have kids getting to the base, hanging at the base, etc. ledges, cliffs, falling rocks, rattlesnakes, and possiby the biggest threat - bees.  i haven't climbed at planetarium though.  mike probably will have the best info - i think he probably climbs there every once in a while.

I’m a little late to the party but The Fun Ship area in Sedona is pretty fun with some solid rock. It’s almost all sport with quite a few routes to choose from. Just be careful around the Hole Lotta Fun route as there’s a detached flake. Like I said I’m a month late so sorry if this doesn’t help!

I once did a 'route' near Moab where the rock around my hand jam would fall away when I let go. I also climbed a tower of mud in Sedona.

I’m also interested in shorter approach, kid-friendly, Sedona climbing. Trad or Sport.

So far the suggestions are Fun Ship, Planetarium, and Lizard Tail Spire.

I also heard that there is a bolted wall behind the Verde Valley School. Any info about that?

Thanks!

kind of a late response, but lizard tail spire would be a good one for kids.  pretty easy approach, climbing. nice little summit.

Last time I visited Sedona they did not have any guidebooks available for purchase, only for viewing....The book is no longer in print and hard to find. Some rock shops still carry it but nothing locally.

If you want to climb towers you're better off without that book.
