Revitalizing this thread...have a 7 year old daughter very interested in climbing with me and we have high traffic spots in Alaska near town with lots of ice tool holes.  Are the speed climbing hooks youre referencing something like the Petzl GOUTTE D'EAU? Theyre typically used for aid climbing but look like they could work.

No, those are little hooks used to aid climb up tiny features like flakes. They are barely 2 inches long and the hook is less than an inch deep.

It took some digging but finally found Pertyx speed climbing hooks (FIfi)

Please be extremely careful with fifis. I have no experience giving kids fifis to ice climb with (and it sounds like it would work fine), but I do climb with fifis a lot. They are way sharper than any ice pick and will pierce much deeper. The pteryx picks don’t come super sharp, but they are still sharper than the sharpest ice tools. Just make sure they aren’t placing their tools right over one another so if the top one rips it doesn’t just go straight into their hand. Not trying to scare you off from using them as I think they’d work pretty well, but just be aware of the added risk vs a normal ice tool

Signed, someone who has seen a lot of injuries from fifis

Great to know.  Thanks for sharing. Will definitely proceed with caution. I found a Charlet Moser Quasar Compact that looks like a good alternative, just need a 2nd!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
