Does anyone have details on this accident? https://www.sltrib.com/news/2021/10/11/rock-climber-killed-fall/ |

I would not consider myself a reliable source, but from social media I can paraphrase what I have read, which may or may not be 100% true. If this is incorrect, or if anyone feels I should delete this post please let me know. I read that Mason was traversing below Satan's Corner in the 4th/low 5th section that you can use to get between Satan's/Beckey's/Cheetah etc (right side of pic) over to the dihedrals (Equipment Overhang/etc on the left side of the pic.) A boulder in that section became dislodged and fell on him. If that is true it would be in this section: RIP Mason. |

Not sure if this is accurate either but I read he was in the chimney below Lisa's Shoulder/Stem that you use to get from the dihedrals to the Becky's/Satan area. So horrible and unbelievable! I was just there a few weeks ago as I am sure many of us been many times. |

Hard to believe this happened to Mason. Scary this occurred in such a highly trafficked spot, really could've happened to anyone. Here's another article that may shed more light on what happened. RIP Mason. https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/rock-climber-dies-after-fall-in-little-cottonwood-canyon |

I tend to think of that size as ok for one to rap from but not more. RIP, Mason. |

So wait, he was just walking around and maybe using the scramble system, not actually on a climb? This is so tragic, and so shocking. |

Wow, I’m so sorry to hear this. Tragic. Could have happened to anyone. |

I'm very sad to hear this. Having scrambled between those two areas any number of times. I recall climbing through a chimney to get between them but I don't know the rock in question unless it made up the chimney itself. It sounds like it was so large I never would have thought of it as a fall or movement hazard. Any time we are in steep terrain something awful can happen, but it's impossible to make sense of something like this. Condolences to everyone affected. |

I went up to take a look yesterday - very sobering! It was not the chimney itself but the rock just (~8 feet) lookers left of it you would scramble over it to get to the diehedrals if you wanted to avoid the down climb from the Lisa's shoulder belay. I had done this scramble just a few weeks ago. There were scrub oak roots left exposed that along with rain and free/thaws loosened the block. Unfortunately for climbers geologic time includes now. RIP Mason and condolences to his family and friends. |

I went up as well to try and assess the rockfall, the block ended up about 40 yards down the main trail(I believe). Be careful out there friends, the recent rain/snow can really shake things up out there. Condolences to all who knew Mason, sounds like he was a great dude. |

RIP Mason. Met the dude in Big Sky, Montana. He always brought the big stoke energy. Damn shame. |
