Fatality in Eldo 10.6.21

It appears it was a soloist at Rincon, but it's a US media report, so take that for what you will. |

Very sad....RIP |

It's in the Camera too. Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. |

I offer my sincere condolences to the Family and Friends of the fallen climber. RIP |

So sad! And thoughts go out to the four climbers that found him. Terrible for all! Out There Article |
|
|
Still no idea who it was? |
|
|
The article says a 31-year-old male from Lakewood. I think it’s pretty rare for the authorities to release a name in under 72 hours. I would expect an official release around Monday. |

Damn, this is tragically sad. Been a rough couple of weeks in Eldo. If you're among the 4 climbers who made the call to authorities or a family member/friend there are grief support services available to help you through this time. americanalpineclub.org/grie… Condolences to the family and friends. |

Climber has been identified. Condolences to family and friends and also to the party that came upon the scene. Be safe out there. |

Thanks Erika. No mention of the route or any sign of rockfall, broken hold, etc in the article. Perhaps they're still investigating. I assume this was the young man: https://www.mountainproject.com/user/200062400/scott-dewey Note the amount of soloing on his tick list. Tons of moderate solos in Eldo. |

John RBwrote: Looks like he didn't really start soloing until August/September of this year (a few random solos before then, but nothing by comparison), but then started at a crazy pace. Ticks show soloing multiple times a week, many pitches, and climbs he had redpointed just a year or two ago. His hardest ticks were only a bit harder than what he was soloing. Seeing that kind of disturbs me. The comments on his ticks seem too excited about soloing. I'm wondering if it bothered anyone else. I don't really have a point as I believe in personal responsibility and if an adult wants to solo it is their choice. While I would personally never choose to solo so close to my max lead grade, this person was soloing things he had done in the past (or very similar) so he knew what he was getting into... but looking at the sudden surge of soloing on his profile just makes me feel like it was addictive behavior or something and should have triggered a warning. Sorry for his friends and the people who found him. |

Condolences to family, friends, responders, and the local climbing community. This is a really tough part of this thing we do, sadly. Best, Helen |

My wife and I met Scott in Eldo while he was out soloing. He was really friendly and extremely psyched on climbing. His enthusiasm was endearing but also a little worrying. When I saw the report of a fallen soloist, I knew it must be him. I’m very saddened by his loss. I was looking forward to running into him again. Condolences to his family and friends. |

This appears to be Scott's Facebook account. Very sad to hear of his accident. |

Mark Rothwrote: Mark, same experience Sept 11. He was on Over and Out and later came up behind me on Emerald City. My partner and I spent about 30 minutes just chilling on the ground in conversation with him. Super friendly and definitely "psyched on climbing". I'm devastated hearing the news that it was Scott. His light shone bright the hour my partner and I spent around him. Heartfelt condolences to friends and family. |

Rest In Peace Scott! Leo strong man! |

Sad news. RIP Scott!! |

I've shared a rope with Scott many times. I considered him to be a good friend and a very capable partner. I've seen him onsight hard 10's in Eldo, and his MP tick list seems to only paint a vague picture. I remember at my bachelor party last year, him telling me about solo days at Table mountain, sometimes climbing 10-15 pitches before class. His stoke for climbing was unparalleled. His enthusiasm was rare. Every chance I had to climb with him, I looked forward to hearing his stories, and his take on things. He will truly be missed, getting to tie in with him was an absolute pleasure. |

RIP Scott, what a tragic loss. Please help comment above with information to assist family and friends if you can. Joshua I think you couldn't have said it any better. I only met Scott a few times but he was an absolute pleasure to be around and his level of excitement on the treasure that is eldo and specifically Rincon area was unparalleled. Scott primarily soloed and loved it. His tick list is not representative of how often he was out there or of everything he's done. I also agree with the comment further up that soloing was thrilling to Scott and he was obsessed with it. He wanted to push himself. His eyes would light up and you could feel energy radiating from him when he described the solos he'd done. Really a great guy and a tragic loss. RIP. Soloing should never be all that exciting since you should be so far under your grade the climbing feels just as solid as walking on the ground. I don't know Scott well enough to know if he was following that guidance, but i don't think he was. I hope we hear more investigation into the accident so we can learn from this and grow as a community. |
