Anyone have better approach beta than the Dixie cragger on locating the decent gully leading to the Netherworld area? My efforts led to bushwhacking and sketchy down climbing for over an hour and then going back to the main trail head. Thanks.

I don’t have the Dixie craggers description to compare to but I’ve always known it as a rap to get down there from above. You could also just keep walking along the cliff line from the Lost Wall trail head to get to to the Netherworld which is my preferred method.

Yep, dont bother trying to find that downclimb gully. It is long since overgrown. It was hard to spot even back when it was first used. Better to just walk in along the main cliff.

The Netherworld gully does not require any rappels. It is hard to find from the top and a bit bushwhacky. Like Chris and others have said, for your first time you're better off hiking in from the regular Lost Wall trailhead.

Once you're there, the gully is easy to spot from the bottom and you can hike out that way at the end of the day. Send one person jogging down the road to get the car while the other person waits at the top of the gully with your packs. Then you'll know exactly where to park and what to expect if you want to go in that way.

One final piece of advice. If you're leaving via the gully, do it in daylight. My first time out was after dark. I learned the hard way that gully is FULL of poison ivy.

That gully is completely overgrown. Rapping in is much easier as is climbing out. The guys that established all those routes almost always rapped in or hiked in because that gully is a shit fest.

OC (curt Johnson) and I reworked the gully trail around 2000-2001. However, I don't think it ever got used much, even after all that effort.

I almost always went up and down the gully. We actually had a pretty decent trail in the beginning, but then there was an ice storm in ‘98 or 99 that messed it up and never quite recovered. Glad to hear someone is going back there, I thought it might have slipped back into the dirt and vegetation.

Gotchya. A couple partners of yours said they hated that gully ;)
