Metoulious tape is different
|
|
Everywhere local has been out of metoulious tape for ages, so when rei online had some finally, we bought a bunch.... too bad it doesnt seem to be the same stuff as it use to be (3-4 months ago) New stuff is like a medical tape, serrated edges, so it tears when you flex your jamming hands. And feels more plasticky. Also less sticky. And doesnt have the trademark American flag on the inside of roll. It comes in the same packaging, little bit of card stock threaded through the center of the roll and stapled. Anyone else notice this? Did I get a bad batch? I'm planning on returning it because its crap... |

Still better than that crap black diamond calls tape. |

Eurotape is the way to go. |

Leukotape ftw |

Andrew Cwrote: I agree. Maybe I've never had "real" Eurotape (pretty sure I have though), but it's nowhere near as sticky as Metolius tape. The Metolius tape is relatively cheap and very available and it would suck it if changed. |

Eurotape is way stickier than any other tape I’ve used, including Metolius. Although tapes seem to change in quality constantly. |

If sticky is what you want then why not just buy crack gloves like Ocon, BD or OR? I have tried Metolius tape and Euro Tape and Euro was my stand out favorite and I was able to get it far cheaper and in bulk than Metolius single role crap. |

I don't really tape anymore, but if I did I would use the spray adhesive first, and then whatever tape I had available. Used to use tincture of benzoin, but the stuff stunk. Try the Tuff-skin or Mueller pre tape. You really won't care what tape brand you use if you pre-spray. |

I've got a pair of crack gloves for one or two pitch days, but when I'm getting after it, I like to tape up. Metoulious has also always been stickier than euro. But the new crap I got is less sticky and tears way to easily.. I guess the hunt is on for the real deal stuff. I may give the leukotape a go. Which one do you recommend?? |

I've never used it for climbing, but Lueko P will stay in place on my foot for 30 miles through sweat and rivers, and still be a pain to get off. So I can't imagine it not working well for crack climbing. It is pretty expensive relative to climbing tape though. |

Kevin Mokracekwrote: Sticky as in "sticks to your hands", not "sticks to the rock". Folks tape up instead of wearing crack gloves for the same reason they want their shoes tight: less slip means you fight your gear less. |

I feel OP's pain so much. I work in outdoor retail currently and our shop hasn't been able to get any of that metolius good good for months. I've been to every climbing shop in a 150 mile radius and nobody has it. I figured there was a supply chain issue, but it would make sense if the factory shut down and they switched to a new one if you think the new stuff is different. No other tape sticks the same... RIP :'( |

That stuff with the flag logo is just run of the mill medical cloth tape. Meh quality. Popular on WFR courses as it can be had dirt cheap so students can use a ton of it. |

I’ve used J&J coach tape for years. It’s not quite as sticky as euro, but will stick fine throughout the day as long as you clean off your hands a bit before applying with a bit of rubbing alcohol. Has a nice cloth feel to it as well. Never personally been a big fan of euro, though I will admit it’s extremely sticky and tough tape. |

Try the new Evolv tape. It's awesome. |

The latest batch (4 rolls) I got in the mail about a week ago was the good old metolius tape. The batch I got before that (from the same vendor) did contain one roll that was different from the rest. Anyway, I hope this is a temporary supply hiccup because this is the best tape I have used. |

I use plain store brand cloth medical tape. Cheap and Works fine |

I know what you mean. I loved that flag inside of it, to be honest. Also, the tape has crap quality now. It took me some time to find a new and better one. I've ordered it online because, as you said, all the locals were out of it. What works for me is dynaprohealth.com. They got some pretty good tape... It doesn't compare to the other one, but it's decent. A local that used to sell this kind of tape told me about it. It doesn't exceed my expectations, but like I said, it does its job... I hope you'll post whatever any other source you got for buying tape. Much appreciated!!! |
