It is a chiounard and has 2100 KG stamped on it.  Anyone know the latest year it could be?

Once again, MP bullshit never ceases to amaze me.

1989 was the last year for Chouinard Equipment Co.

I believe it's a "light D". Seems like when they switched to BD they put a blue gate on it that made it look more "modern". I've got a few of them, my first rack purchase. So I would say Chouinard 1989 or before.

That depends, will it buy me a taco?

BD sold light Ds without blue gates into the early 90s at least. In any case, I agree this looks like the immediate Chouinard precursor of the light D. Very similar shape but different stock.

Not a light D.  They were rated 2300 kg.  As stated above, it’s a “Featherweight”/ New Standard at 2100 kg and the slightly offset shape.  (See below: New Stds on left, light D’s on the right.  First BD light D is rated 22 kN rather than 2300 kg.)

Also, Even though it was BD at the time, many if not all Carabiners continued to be stamped “Chouinard” up thru ‘91 I believe...till BD actually implemented the change.

Edit:  well shucks.  Those posted links explain it all!  Cool history.

[Edit:] I agree, it's the "New Standard", due to the raised lettering as noted by Bill Schick.

I was working with the older 2010 thread from supertopo which had the "Improved Featherweight" but not the "New Standard",

and it's a match to that overall shape, but not to the raised lettering.

Thanks folks, I was hoping they were a local legend‘s originals from 1971 on a very secluded rock, but alas, it looks like someone had been there since.

1982-84.  Photo by Ray Brooks, from the 2010 supertopo thread on the Chouinard carabiner timeline.

partly reproduced in the 2019 "Redpoint University" thread linked above.

The nose on this "Improved Featherweight" is a little larger than on the "New Standard".

You’re showing stamped markings, OP’s is raised markings - so his is 85-89, per the same thread.

BITD the biners on the right were all I had, along with a ton of ovals. Then I went to Neptune Mtn in Boulder and discovered Petzl Spirits...I never bough another "light D" carabiner again.

Charlie, are you saying that you went out into the wild and thought you were on new ground and found this biner there?

Back then they would have been in Lbs.!

I have some old Chouinards stamped in Lbs, then Kg and now Kn.
I also have other carabiners without any ratings. Some other European ones rated in “Dan”

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
