Five Fun/Scrambling Locations Near Asheville, NC?
|
|
I’m going to NC with friends and they all want to do outdoorsy things. We’ll be white water rafting one day, hiking, etc. I pitched the idea of taking them climbing (two of us are sport climbers), and they loved it. We are looking for a crag with a decent approach that has two or three 5.6/7s bunched together or scambles near Asheville. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! |

You have very few options in WNC for what you are looking for, but I promise you it's Little Bearwallow Falls climbing area. Google that, and you'll find a link to the guide on the Carolina Climber Coalition website. These are trad-bolted climbs, so expect run out on easier terrain, but otherwise you've got a 5.5, 2 5.6s, a 5.7 and a 5.8 all directly next to each other (and a waterfall) with great belays. Easy approach on a popular tourist trail. Everything is pretty slabby, and you may want a stick clip...I think one or two of those routes has its crux pretty much immediately. As far as scrambles, there's cool stuff in Linville gorge (hour and a half from AVL), south side of Cedar Rock has a massive 250ft 5.0-5.2 slab you can solo up with an amazing ledge and several cool grassy islands on the way. Hit me up if you've got questions about any of my suggestions |

Hey T! Thanks for all this. I knew it would be hard to find once I searched on the MP map. This looks like exactly what I wanted to find!!!! THANK YOU! |

If you want a full days worth of scrambling, check out Left Wishbone, it's a ton of fun, and very close to Asheville all things considered! It has a page on MP, but when I did it the AllTrails page for it helped a ton as it also has GPS waypoints, which made routefinding miles easier than it would have been! |

I'm not sure I understand how to get there from the MP and AllTrails beta. Which waypoint is the base of the scramble? |

Matias The Climbing Gauchowrote: Looking at that waypoint map, the base of the scramble is just about where the top most waypoint is. Where the path goes from north to hard west, and up steep terrain. Great gully, but I wonder if new spring growth is going to make it tough. Should be fun either way and the ridge up top is insanely beautiful. Edit: waypoint 4. |

Bingpot, waypoint 4! When it comes to spring vegetation, the sooner you do it the better, haha. The actual scramble isn't too bad for plants, but the top out/getting to the ridge trail could get dense |
