I borrowed my friends ice tools, but then I lost one. Most likely, it fell off my pack while doing some upside down post-holing. I asked him what kind of tool it was so that I could buy him a new one, but he said they were his loaner tools and thus did not want me to purchase a new one and would not tell me what kind it was. Another friend suggested to me that they are the old BD cobras. Below is what they look like. At the very least, I'd like to buy him a used tool as a replacement - preferably one that is at least somewhat similar! Let me know what you've got. Also attached some pictures of said post-holing - although I at least managed to remain right side up in these.

That isn’t a cobra, it’s a BD Fuel.

Yeah, my friend who thought it was a Cobra just texted me and says it is actually a Fusion tool. Which Google tells me has now been updated to be the Fuel. (Obviously, I'm not an ice climber).

Second generation BD Fusion is what that is. Closest thing on the market today  is the BD Fuel with the hammer.

The real question is why are you wallowing when you have skis?

you could give him $150~175 for roughly replacement cost for a used tool of that range/condition

We had just topped out the ice climb and were walking over to the ski line and were going to put skis on there. You can be assured that I put my skis on as soon as I made it out of that giant hole in the picture.

The post-hole that led to the loss of the ice tool was on the way back to the car, which follows a drainage which was losing snow quickly and quite rocky with lots of water holes open. My splitboarder friend was not comfortable riding along that drainage, so I was wallowing with him out of solidarity. Although again, I quickly put my skis back on after being sucked into a giant hole. But not before I lost the ice tool, apparently!

Go back and look for it... Metal detector maybe... Or wait for snow to melt

Sounds like you just need some less gumby partners

Hey I have a single petzl ergo and an old trango they both are mint and swing similar to the fuel. 50-75$ or so? Great to see one of em find a home, never use either of them.  I ski/climb drink beer in mid state nh

For real. I promised not to tell, but I'm pretty sure I saw him take on an ice screw too..

This sounds like it might be what I'm looking for. Thanks! I'll ask him if it sounds okay to him and then I'll send you a PM.

Just putting this out there...ice tools do not mix. Almost every tool climbs very differently. Think about it as hiking with a boot on one foot and a tennis shoe on the other. The right thing to do, regardless of what he says, is replace it with the identical tool or give him the cash equal to the replacement.

The tool you lost is considered one of the fairly new, higher-end tools. It’s clear that you’re trying to do the right thing, so just offering some guidance toward that end goal.

Thank you. So, would a new Fuel work okay with the old Fusion? Or am I basically stuck looking for either: a) a single Fusion, which seems unlikely since they are no longer manufactured, or b) just buy two tools which are comparable in quality to what I lost?

Alternatively, I have no plans on Sunday so I could go for a swim up that drainage.. might still be some skiing to be had higher up so it might not be an absolute waste of time.

In my opinion, no. Plus, for the price of a single Fuel you could buy a pair of good condition used Fusions. The good news is that Fusions are not a rare tool at all. And, while they were popular, they had some issues that many people did not like (myself included) so they come up for sale pretty regularly. If I were in your position I'd tell my friend I will be replacing his tool with an identical one, as soon as I can find one. Ice season is just about over now in most places and I'm certain you'll find a replacement by next season. Set an eBay alert and grab a pair (or maybe a single if you're lucky). Or, offer him $200 if he'd prefer. Again, this is just what I'd do.

I second this, that tool isn’t completely lost yet.

It's a long shot, but might be worth posting about it in the lost and found section too.

Please update for when you find the tool swimming with a metal detector. With pictures!

Went back. Didn't find it. Oh well. At least I didn't fall into the creek. Updated the title to specify that I am looking for a Fusion tool.
