What I was struck by was they were still setting ropes as they climbed to the summit for the Westerners to hopefully follow on future attempts. Though I suppose they will be helpful to them onntje decent.

I think it is a fitting triumph for all they have done for climbing. Well done!

Awesome news--here's hoping they all make it down safely.

They didn't...

@ Victor---what information do you have?  I see some posts about an injury/rescue and possible/probably death of Sergi Mingote, from Spain.  I don't know what part, if any, he played in the summit team.  Not that it matters, really, what team he belonged too. Bad news, if true.

Oh then that's my bad, I was going off of an update on rockandice.

"Update: Tragically, on the descent, Sergi Mingote, co-leader of Seven Summits Treks, died. This from Dawa Sherpa, another co-leader of Seven Summits Treks, who is currently at K2 Base Camp:“Unfortunately we lost Sergi ! Best climber and very good friend of us. While descending from C1 to Basecamp he suddenly fell down to Advance Basecamp. Alex Gavan, Tamara and two other polish climber gave him help in ABC, we sent medical team from Basecamp but unfortunately could not save him anymore. We where informed by unexpected movement on his gps tracker and could see he made a big fall, members at the site quickly confirmed the accident, but couldn’t do much to help him anymore.”"

Prayers for the sherpas to make it down safely.

An amazing achievement. The gnarliest 8000m peak, and in winter.  Only fitting that Sherpas accomplished this remarkable feat.  Chapeau!

Nimjal Purja (Nimsdai) has claimed he made the ascent without oxygen - https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2021/01/18/winter-k2-update-no-os-summit/
