Free Pitons for worthy recipient

Hi All,

I have 60-some pins a bunch of aid nuts, copperheads, hooks and rivet hangers as well as some oval biners to give away. Please no collectors or resellers!!! I want these to go to someone who will use them in their intended fashion. Make you case and I'll choose who gets them. You'll have to pay shipping but that's it. I'm not going to split them in any way. One person gets the lot. If you think this isn't legit-my name is Scott Backes you can ask around about me...

I would love to get your pins. I have several mixed alpine lines that could use some metal.  These are lines that need pins not bolts. It would be so cool to have and place pins that I know have been used on some really hard cutting edge climbs. So I’m getting in line. Hoping.

Scott Backes in a long and insightful interview said "only climb with people that you love, and don't let them down." Words to live by- in climbing and in life. I try to use that in my own climbing. His first ascents changed the game. Plus doing it from home in Minnesota, getting trained up for the world's biggest, most complex terrain, is unreal- growing up there I can't really imagine building skills and fitness that way, I had to leave to be closer to the mountains to even try. Fucking legend!!

Whoa Scott! That is an amazing collection of aid gear to be passing along for free. Easily worth a grand or two. My question is, where in this day and age would someone need 60 pins?

It's is gonna be hard to make sure these don't go to a reseller or collector. I used to pass down no longer used gear on the taco for the same reason.

Scott if I had access to that many nuts and pitons I could convince some other poor sucker up here in AK to go hammer them into some crumbly, awful, no good rock face! But I'm sure there are more worthy applicants!

What a great thing to do, Scott. A lesson for all of us as we (I!) get older and wonder what to do with stuff. Let us know how this story ends.

Hi John - thanks for reposting that. I still have a few hundred awesome, historic old bolts from El Cap, Half Dome, etc. if anyone is interested. 

To everyone who has old pitons sitting in their sheds: forget about it - drop em off with me and when I move out of the Valley I will for sure leave them with the next guy - heck Werner might live forever, so he'll be a good resource! .....why do we need people picking coal out of holes in the ground to make pitons, when thousands of them sit idle all day in America and Yosemite is the only place where folks use them regularly. Let's share our resources to reduce our impact!

Maybe this is not your intention, but considering that you just got 60 pins, hooks, etc for free, pins that many other people expressed interested in, your post comes off as quite greedy. There are numerous other people and places that want and use pins, not only in Yos, where finding pins to borrow is easy. To say in essence “yah I just got this huge lot of gear for free, oh and anyone else with gear they don’t want send them to me”  is.... well greedy. More appropriate would have been a simple “Thank You”

I think the reason that link was posted was not to hype the historic bolts you sell, but to illustrate that you should be disqualified as a collector/re-seller.

Hopefully we can all agree that giving 2ed life to old gear is ecologically preferable to the manufacture of new gear.

If other people out there have pins they don’t use anymore I urge them to do as Scott Backes has and offer them up to the community, and try to spread them around.

A little jealous yes. But mostly I think there are many other worthy recipients for the next bunch. Versus Erik’s call for everyone to send every unwanted piton to him since they can only be used in the valley anyways. Maybe it was a hot take but, to me, it came off as a bit tone deaf and ungrateful, given that he JUST hit a big jackpot. I don’t know Erik, we have not met, and I have no ill will towards him. I only know of him as a guidebook author and from a thread or two on the taco.
