Autobelay, actually free solo, at the gym without clipping in the autobelay. Twice. |

Bought a Black Totem C4. |

Showed up at the crag with a five person crew and was the only person who could lead. |

I recently dropped my cellphone/wallet out of my pocket while rappelling, which wouldn’t be so gumby if I hadn’t also dropped a cam, a nut, two belay devices, a guidebook, and my keys in the past couple years, all on separate occasions. |

A couple of years ago, I had more than 40 years of climbing under my belt. I lead an onsight first ascent of a 10+ flared chimney, at 8,000 feet out west. Second pitch, winter winds blasting, small belay stance with marginal gear anchor and I clipped in with a figure eight.. I had the other end of the rope on the back of my harness to pull up the drill. My brother was belayiing me, he yelled up that there wasn't enough rope (it was a 90 foot pitch that looked much shorter from below). So I pulled the rope through the pitch, clipped it in, then untied and suddenly realized that I had untied the WRONG end and I was totally off belay. I thought "I can completely freak out, or re-tie this figure eight very slowly and now I AM BACK ON BELAY!" I still cant believe that I made that mistake. Be careful out there! |

I cleaned an overhung sport route while rappelling. |

Belayed someone for an entire pitch with the grigri backwards once... I never let anyone leave the ground w/o checking their knot and the device now. |

I was taught to climb outside by a friend. When I first started at a gym, I would clip the auto-belay through my two tie-in points instead of my belay loop. I probably did that for six months until someone corrected me. |

Brought a big group to Rumney and set up my hammock. Showed up late to the Gunks so there were no parking spots. Parked at a hiking trailhead and hiked like a mile+ to Peterskill carrying a backpack full of random shit, pads, and a cooler full of beer. |

Pretty sure this was my first ever outdoor lead - got to the last bolt of a climb, realized the anchor was missing a bolt & the other bolt was mank. Put two brand new opposite & opposing BD lockers on the last bolt & lowered off |

sport climb with two purcell prusiks made of 8mm cord for cleaning. Got a new set of alpine draws using nylon runners and ovals - in 2010. |

Since we didn’t know how to lead, my buddy and I would hike to the top of the cliff to set up a top rope. While one guy leaned over the edge to reach the anchor bolts, the other guy held onto his harness ... for safety. |
