old petzl quarks and their cascade picks

I like my quarks, albeit their 14 years old but finally got to use them a year ago, so virtually new (and yes I'm new to ice climbing).  Someone looked at my quarks and said alot of people prefer the picks that came with them (cascades) over the new picks.  I wasn't sure why, can anyone tell me?  I was thinking about getting the newer versions of the quarks.  Seems lighter

compared to which pick? I am guessing the ICE which have a slightly different angle than the cascade.

As far as I know the new'is (released around 2016 I think) Pur'ICE picks are basically improved cascade picks. They climb ice super well.

So if you end up picking up some new Quarks also get a set of Pur'ICE picks and use the ICE picks which come with the Quarks for alpine stuff.

thanks for response.  Which angle are you talking about?  Would you be able to tell me difference between ICE and Pur'ICE picks?  I also heard there are some 3rd party manufacturers that makes picks as well.

Thanks

AFAIK there are NO picks currently in production for the original Quarks. No ICE, no Pur Ice (those are for the current Quark). The original Quarks with the picks that came with them - the Cascade - were absolutely awesome for pure ice. The 2nd Gen Quark was, in my hands, significantly inferior.

Anyone looking for original Cascade picks has their work cut out for them. I had a few stashed away but finally sold them off to folks that needed them more than I did.

As I have posted here a while back, with a little bit of work you can fit non-Petzl picks to the 1st Gen Quarks. CAMP Awax B rated picks, specifically. They perform as well as the Cascade, and are still available (last time I checked anyway). OP, you might want to get a pair to salt away if you see yourself wearing out your Quarks down the road.

Would these work? I purchased my quarks in 2006 not sure what version that is

The pick angle. The Pur'Ice is a couple degrees shallower than the Ice and Dry picks. The Pur'dry is even steeper.

Also the Pur'Ice is narrower than the Ice and Dry pick. Check out thealpinestart for pictures of the different picks.

The new Quark with pickweights and Pur'Ice picks will climb ice better than your old Quarks.

The old picks are out of stock in both online stores you linked. You won't be able to buy them anymore.

Post a pick of your tools and we'll tell you what version they are (and thus what your pick options are).

Thanks for doing this.  Here's 3 photos.  Second photo a bit blurry but word says cascade

Like I wrote above. The stores are out of stock (no idea why they even still list them) and won't restock since those picks are not made anymore.

Apart from modifying the Cassin picks you are out of luck.

Umm, have you tried putting a current Petzl pick in the old Quarks?

I have a pair that look the same as what the OP posted pics of, and I have climbed on them with current Ice and Pur'ice picks.

I’m currently running the Pur’ Ice picks on my original Quarks.  They’re great!  Ice performance is on par w/ the old cascade picks.

No, I haven't tried that. Looks like a solution to all the old-timers' problem!
