Chop The Smith Rebar Ladder
|
|
I think we are all disgusted by this blemish on Smith Rock right now. The ethical problems with this rebar are obvious to even the most casual of observers but we need to clean up that face. Im currently working on contacting the Access Fund, State Park officials, & now our climbing community. I confess i've never had to chop bolts or rebar off a climb. Either way lets get organized and remove this. Anyone wishing to help in any way shape or form please don't hesitate to contact me or use this form. |

The first thing you should do is read the recently issued park order: |

Thanks Allen for the info it's appreciated. It's not my intention to just go chopping the rebar without a plan or consent of the park. My intention is to bring the community and the park service to a joint effort on this and contribute where i can. |

Pretty sure this is already being discussed by some pretty talented folks. |

Some fool went out there with an angle grinder and did a poor job. I almost think it was SS just to make things more dramatic but who knows. Now, someone way more skilled is going to fix it. Probably an affiliate of the High Desert Climbers Alliance... maybe. I don't work for them and I'm not a member, but we collaborated on some stewardship in the spring and they do it right. Donations always help! |

So a bit of an update for everyone the park service is aware of the rebar ladder. Or... rather what was. The thick of it has been removed and they will be removing the remaining rebar and covering it with rock |

Don Halowrote: Per my "fool" comment, I'd be happier to be wrong than right on that one. Looking forward to having someone with real skills fix this mess as it makes me sick to my stomach that someone did this to Smith. Regards. |

Why are all the MP Smith rebar threads deleted? I understand the presumed bolter is a troublemaker and maybe the threads devolved into shit shows, but how about some info on the situation?? |
|
|
Wow. The only thread Alan ever commented in is deleted. 2020 continues to suck. |

Would imagine the threads got removed since most of what was driving the vandalism at Smith was attention. And most of the attention and therefore motivation was coming from having a platform on this site. |

Sorry this happened, guys. FWIW, make the most of it, work with your rangers, and keep that good relationship going! City of Rocks has been "managed" for a long time now, and I'm super grateful for that. With booming populations in much of the west, the sooner the better, to have long range plans in place that will carry through even after any particular individuals are gone (any players, good bad or indifferent). Taking care of our places is a big burden locals take on, sometimes for decades, that all of us benefit from. So thanks for caring, and thanks for the hard work! Best, Helen |
