How busy is the Gunks / Peterskill on weekdays right now

We are thinking about heading down from a little further north tomorrow (Thursday) to climb and I was wondering how busy things have been on weekdays. Is it like normal summer weekdays where there are just some locals and the random person here and there? Or is it overrun. Also how has Peterskill been?

We would be driving down an hour or so probably getting there around 11 or 12 but I don't want to waste our time if the parking is going to be full or if there are going to be people everywhere trying to cough on me.

Not very crowded. Don't know about Peterskill-- they just opened and I haven't been. But the Trapps hasn't even been so bad on the weekends.

I was up at Peterskill last Friday and it was empty. I only saw a few hikers and a group bouldering. I asked the person at the gate if they had been busy since reopening and they said that the busiest day had only seen about 20 climbers. Maybe it was the weather that day as even the Trapps parking looked pretty empty when I drove by.

Pretty dead My brother and I saw maybe a total of 10 other parties all day on a recent weekday trip. Got right on high e with no wait and nobody climbing it ahead of us. I genuinely couldn't believe how it was compared to my visits this time last year.

I ended up going down today (a Thursday). Despite great weather the West Trapps parking lot was < 50% full at noon. No lines for anything really even the easy classics.Definitely some people in the Uberfall area but it thinned way out just past Jackie. I didn't see any really past Strictly.

Went this weekend to Peterskill. Lots of very large groups occupying multiple walls for hours. Saw routes that were setup but unoccupied. Park staff said they allow a few independent guides into the park. My partner and I were able to get on two routes from one anchor. We’re going back sometime during the week. Park staff said they’re pretty much empty during the week days. By the time we left around 1 the climbing permits were filled.

If you are looking for bolted anchors, these can be highly contested. The following are usually occupied for most of the day on sat and sun during the busy season: Anna’s route, Bunk Bed Wall, Reach-Around, Enterprise wall, Oops, Yellow Wallpaper, Psycho Crack, or Golden Dream. Unless you get really lucky, you’ll probably have to wait or befriend another party to get on one of them.

The good news is… If you have a 75’+ static rope and are willing to climb routes with a star or two less, there are still usually plenty of open climbs. Plus, you can walk almost the entire area in about 12 minutes so it’s pretty easy to drop packs and scout the whole scene before you commit. It has generally been pretty quiet this year, and usually when I go to PK on weekdays I only see a couple of other parties max.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
