Why aren’t there two bolts on the second rappel on Hallet? Why are we still using slings?

I don’t know but you didn’t happen to see a set 2 hexes on the great dihedral did you? Bailed off of them right before the park closed. Curious if anyone has grabbed them yet.

Nothing is stopping you from hauling a hammer and a drill up there and spending 25 minutes drilling the holes.

Because it's only one rap if you're climbing on double ropes

Or one rope with some 4th or low 5th class downclimbing.

Any special beta for this? Just downclimb instead of rap #2? Haven't been up there in a while, but planning to soon. Thanks.

If you take a 60 or 70 there are two raps. Downclimbing would be difficult to say the least. When you get to the top of Hallet follow a series of Cairns to the rappels on the east side.

I did not.

In my experience with a 70 (which it seems like most people carry) you can get far enough down to where the downclimb is short and straightforward 3rd/4th class. Have you tried it with a 70, Nic?

That said, I only own a 60, that's what we used a couple summers ago, so we did two raps and the sling anchor seemed solid. It actually looked like you could downclimb even with a 60 but not so easily. I have done that as well but it was quite a few years ago when I soloed more regularly, so while it is possible, I wouldn't recommend it (the whole entire thing from top to bottom goes at 5.4).

... or a lead rope and tag-line.   Either way, you should have two ropes.

That's what I recall doing - no raps at all.

Because it’s not a sport crag and the slung horn is bomber. Replace the tat if you don’t like how it looks

That is a really long walk and puts you either at the top of Flattop or in Chaos. Would take 2-3x longer.

That's the way it was done in the 80's. There was no rap route IIRC.

Walk off to the west and two raps with a 70 plus a short down climb(10 feet)to the east. I think a rap station would be good there. There is already one for the first rap and the bolts could be hidden on the second rap instead of the big pile of crap that has been there in the past. That being said don’t expect someone else to do the work. Also if you replace the tat take the old crap with you.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
