Material Difference in ClimbTech 3/8” and 1/2” SS Hangers?

I was noticing that the color of the two different size hangers is not the same.  Got out a magnet and determined the 3/8” is a lot more magnetic than the 1/2”.  Anyone know anything about this?  They are marketed as the same hanger from the same manufacture; just with a different hole diameter.  Please enlighten me.

There is potential for the same grade of stainless to have different magnetic properties if the amount of work in the material is different.

Does the more magnetic one snap to the magnet or just have a little more pull. It's possible someone accidentally sent you plated if it snaps to the magnet.

Edit to add: is the more magnetic one the 3/8? As far as I can find climbtech only makes plated 3/8.
For clarification: I meant that plated only comes in 3/8 I don't see any half inch plated. If the 3/8 one has the magnetic pull it's more likely you got the plates by mistake.

Yes it was the 3/8” and yes it snaps.  ClimbTech markets they are both SS on their website though.

Interesting, I've got a bunch of 3/8 climb tech 304 hangers, and they have hardly any magnetic pull at all, certainly not enough for a magnet to hold their weight.  They are a few years old though, so I wonder if something has changed.

304 should have very little magnetic pull.

They don’t looks as shiny as those.  They look more like the ones in the photo I attached, which as I was saying looks different than the 1/2”.  Not saying that didn’t happen, just explaining.

How much did they cost each?

Did you buy them directly from Climbtech? The last order of 3/8 hangers i got directly from Climbtech are definitely stainless and have nearly no magnetic pull.

I didn’t buy them, they are from a friend who bought a ton from BackcountryGear recently (probably why they are now back ordered).  I will have to ask him the price but I know he said he got stainless.

On a separate but similar note, I just tested a Fixe PLX HCR hanger with a magnet and I also snaps.

Sorry if all this seems strangely nit picky, just trying to understand what’s going on.

The current image on their website makes me think the 3/8 and 1/2 SS are from two different sources (or are at least different models) .  They are distinctly NOT the same hanger with different hole sizes.  Look at the radius on the bottom edge and top right near the bolt holes.  Different.  Same for the radius above the clip in hole.

CT has offered a number of different hangers over the years.  Off the top of my head (my memory may be off on some )- gen1 400 series with no markings at all. bright and very magnetic.  gen2 400 series with markings.  gen 3 switched to 304, and a different shape but was still fairly shiny.  gen 4 304SS but they were tumbling it more to get the dull look more akin to an old petzl.  I think gen4 is what they currently have on their site.   The 1/2" one pictured is new (?)

PLX = duplex 1.4462 grade steel and will be more magnetic.

You could do a spark test to determine what type of metal they are made of.

I just tried a magnet on my ClimbTech SS 3/8 hangers I got from Backcountry and a small magnet will stick to them but barely.  It definitely does not snap on.

Might depend on the magnet, some thinner magnets I have barely stick.  Can you share a pic of the hanger?

  1. Curtis if you compare how your magnet atracts known material say a rusty lucky hanger from Hidden Valley and a older Petzl hanger to your CT hangers that will tell you something.

I checked a bunch of old hangers with a small but strong magnet some of the staiinless ones could be picked up with the magnet but were easy to shake off. A plated steel hanger would not shake off easilly.

This a SS 3/8 ClimbTech hanger.  The small magnet will just stick to it but if I wiggle just a bit it falls off.  Hope that helps.

Definitely following. Concerned for a decent number of climbtech hangers I've placed.

From my experience, it’s very easy to tell the plated hangers from the SS ones. Especially from climbtech. You should post a clearer picture of both hangers in question. Side by side.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
