Current Gunks Climbing Conditions

Hey everyone. I got upset a couple weeks back when I thought I missed my last Gunks opportunity of the season before cold and snow set in, but weather this Tuesday looks tolerable enough to climb.

But given the snow the past couple weeks (at least in NYC) I’m not sure if it’s worth the trip. Anyone been there recently have a snow / water seepage status? (for trad, not for bouldering).

I did some XC skiing at Minnewaska and a run around the Overcliff/Undercliff loop on Saturday. There was not much snow on the Trapps (hence the run instead of ski). You’ll be a bit wet on some routes but I bet you’d have luck finding climbable conditions. Wish I didn’t have work, I’d love to join you!

edit: I didn’t actually get up close on any rock. Just observed from the Undercliff carriage road.

Plenty of dry rock. Wear layers, pack hand warmers and tone it down a bit.

Bouldering will probably be more enjoyable than climbing routes.

Thanks for the responses! We ended up getting out and had no problems finding stuff to climb.

Resurrecting an old thread, but is this weekend (chance of rain Fri, warm-ish Sat and Sun) potentially viable? Haven't been to the gunks before and don't know how dry things are this time of year.

if there's any wind on saturday then sunday hopefully will be bone-dry.  If there's no wind saturday (especially if it's sunny saturday) then sunday will be dry except for a few spots where it stays damp for a long time.  If you search around you can certainly find recommendations for climbs to do after rain.  Anything on Arrow wall will be climbable (especially arrow).

Dude it is beautiful RIGHT NOW. I haven't been up this week but the Gunks dries quickly. There may be some wet spots today (though I would expect there to be much climbable rock). By the weekend it is going to be perfect.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
