Hi- a couple of us are looking to go ice climbing MLK weekend but I’m having trouble finding areas with a top rope set up in northern Cali. Any suggestions? Anyone know if there are top ropes in the eastern sierras or Tahoe?

Closest to you with simi-reliable ice is Coldstream Canyon near Truckee. Cascade falls and Eagle Creek Canyon are near SLT, but are more finicky with weather.

Surest bet is June Lake or Lee Vining.

FYI: it would be much easier at all these locations (except Cascade) to have someone first lead the ice, but there are walkups if it’s your only option.

Eagle Creek Canyon ice isn’t in as of today. +1 for June Lake or Lee Vining. Coldstream would be a huge pain to TR, and a bit tricky if you’ve never been there before.

Just took a 2 day training at June lake and Lee Vining canyon.
Got my ice tools. Looking for opportunities like this one, and go practice.
I can drive and car pool in my SUV. Live in Campbell CA.

Don't forget near Rancheria Falls near Huntington Lake, East of Fresno. Ski at China Peak one day, then hit the ice the next. The ice is almost always in given it's shaded orientation and its easily TRable. I was there over the holiday and it was lots of fun.. page here:

Feb 15th and 16th would be good.
Last report I could find:

That's when we did the training. It was good conditions.

There are short flows on Donner Summit. Look around snowshed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
