California DOES NOT HAVE THE HIGHEST TAXES IN THE U.S.
To lump Mammoth & Bishop together is the height of ignorance.
There are job openings in almost all of the Businesses here!

If you say so.  I'll defer to you as a local and stand corrected.

edit:  I agree Bishop and Mammoth are different in character.  I just think of them as one area/location when it comes to outdoor activities.

When you look at combined income, sales and other taxes/fees, etc., CA is one of, if not the highest taxed states, maybe second to NY.

As far as jobs go, you are right.  Googled it and was surprised.  Bishop has certainly changed since I was there.

Google whatever you want, Ca. does not have the highest tax rate. How you or I pay tax my differ depending on how we make, save & or invest,& spend our money. For me Ca. is a medium tax state. If I lived in Texas I would be taxed about 17% above what I pay living in Ca.

After leaving Denver, my gf and I spent some #VanLife time, with a little Airbnb and house-sitting mixed in. We spent 6 weeks in Bend, a month in Boise, a bit of time in Vegas, and a lot of driving in between. In the end, we settled in Lake Tahoe.

I could tell you what I didn't like about the other places...but it's easier to say that Tahoe will satiate ANY desires you have for climbing (pretty much year round if you're stoked) and skiing (super long resort season, super duper long back country season).

There are a variety of options here, from true city (Reno), to tiny town (Incline Village), with a few stops in between (South Lake and Truckee). I don't think living here is perfect -- don't get me started on the "food scene," if you can even call it that -- but the sacrifices we make culturally and professionally are more than made up by the access to the mountains. Let me know if you'd like to know more...

Your personal tax rate is irrelevant when comparing states in the aggregate.

The 10 highest income tax states for 2019 are:

  • California 13.3%
  • Hawaii 11%
  • Oregon 9.9%
  • Minnesota 9.85%
  • Iowa 8.98%
  • New Jersey 8.97%
  • Vermont 8.95%
  • District of Columbia 8.95%
  • New York 8.82%
  • Wisconsin 7.65%

OH Please! ---- I have paid 0 Ca. state tax 12 of the last 15 years. Your taxes depend on how you make, invest, & spend your money.  AND more importantly all of the other taxes like sale tax, property tax. Ca. overall is a medium tax state.

I can live anywhere in the world I want, I live in Ca. for a lot of good reasons.

This should be about Bend, Oregon which is a very cool place & sometimes downright cold place to live.

Wading into this discussion, better to google "effective tax rate," I believe...

Probably, but that gets into the weeds really quickly.

Yes, move to bend or surrounding area. Period...

If you're willing to be further from Snowboarding for lower cost of living Redmond or even mardas would save you alot, if you're wanting to be closer to the snow (bachelor) cost of living will rise...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
