Gunks climbing this Sunday/Monday?

How feasible is climbing in the gunks in the winter? I'm hoping that the temps above 40 and sun forecast for the weekend will allow me to climb either Sunday or Monday. I was planning to hit a crag near me, but if the gunks would be viable I might want to head there.

The winter days > 40 if it's sunny and not too windy are some of my favorites. A tarp is a good piece of kit for the snow.

back when i was hardcore, we used to leave at 6 am to get to the gunks before 8. wed end up sitting at the base of whatever climb we were going to start heating up hot chocolate and coffee on a portable stove and watching the ice melt off the walls. now i hate the cold......screw that....

ahyhow, to answer your question, its always climbable, how cold are you willing to put up with?

I get your point, but I'm more asking about the likelihood of icy or snow melt making it too wet or not. The cold I can handle, but if I drive two hours and it's too wet and miserable because of melting snow and ice I'll be pretty annoyed.

Well, things ARE awfully wet and icy right now.

Forecast is saying it won’t get past the mid 30s and not a lot of sun.  Add to the that the gunks just got some snow and a bunch of ice.  If it was me it wouldn’t be worth the 4 hour round trip.

Update is  better than that for Monday.  Still cold most of the day; the high occurs around when the Trapps go into the shade.  But bright sun should make the cliff face warm up nicely.

Please give a conditions report/update if you make it out there today. I'm looking to head there tomorrow.

Hey all, thanks for the advice. Turns out an old knee injury decided to act up this weekend and I can barely walk, let alone climb.

The carriage road is icy, but the cliff is reasonably clear (or course, depending on the route). Plenty of folks were out today.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
