Thanks for your support Dillon.  I hope the map helped the efficiency of your trip.

To be clear, I am not the author of the new guide.  I'm anxiously awaiting Coldfear's book, just like everyone else.

This map really helped me out last year as it was my first time in the Southfork! Great quality and fit right in my chest pocket. Would 100% buy again.

This is a little lengthy, bear with me.

Nearly two years ago, Mr. Jason Todd, sent me a copy of his Map. I have yet to do a full review of his work.

Background: In the very early 90’s I was pressured, by a magazine editor, to expose the frozen treasures of the Southfork Valley. She told me that “If you don’t write something, we will.” The time had finally come.
My brother, his partners, my friends and partners had been quietly racking up a wide variety of first ascents for quite some time. We truly had just a glimpse of how fantastic this valley really was, not to mention how grand some of these climbs represented as “a world class venue” in North America.
I had made a hand drawn map that we “filled in the blanks” as we plugged away. I organized “invitation only” ice fests with the express purpose to fill in the blanks. During my Final Fest, she (the magazine editor) showed up, unannounced, and got her hands on my map, from my friends, while I was high up in Schoolhouse Creek doing the FA of Classroom Bully. We never physically met, she and her partner were off to Canada.
I was being pushed to write a full-on guide book. I did not have the time or energy for this sort of thing, and I did not want to “let the cat out of the bag” just yet. So much more to explore. I ended up self-publishing a 1:24k map of the valley with drainages and climbs on the map side. On the back was an intro and a bit of information on how to get there, grades and how to get down. I had no computer mapping technology at the time so I simply pieced together the four quads and used mylar to trace the overlays onto the quads, sticky taped the labels, etc, very crude by todays standards. I was on a tight budget so I sold some of the content to the magazine. 1,200 maps were printed and sold by 2000. I have a few left. That’s it.

More Background Data: During the winter of 2001/2002 I met Joe Josephson, for my first time, at a slideshow presentation in Cody, WY. I had not really planned on going to this showing but ended up there and we visited at length about the magnificence of the Southfork and a future guide book. We exchanged contacts and eventually I wrote over 75% of the text for the Southfork Chapters of his award winning guide book, Winter Dance published in 2004.

Back to the Review: At first glance of Mr. Todd’s Map it looked very similar to mine but smaller. After a few more minutes it was very clear that he had done a few things that I had wanted to do with mine and he also added some very clever features that I had never thought of. The contours of this map are fantastic. Mine sucked, I only had the 7000’ and 9000’ contours over-layed in. This map is not to a standard scale (correct me if I’m wrong, please) but very readable.
On the Map Side: The Private Land and Wilderness Boundary are very clearly marked and labeled. The Major drainages and Trailheads are also very clearly marked and labeled. The use of three-digit acronyms and color-coded dots for the climbs and pitches is very nice. The addition of general wind and avalanche hazard is also very true. This map, as well as mine may be difficult for beginner map people. It is oriented to the flow of the river, NOT NORTH.
The Back Side: The Intro and FAQ’s are a must read for Southfork Climbers of all abilities and need to be taken seriously. You are not roadside in Colorado, Utah or anywhere else... You must use other resources to get a true grasp on the proposed climb/route you have planned. This map alone is not enough. This place is very remote and demands respect. Unlike the Bozeman area, local S&R are typically not capable of rescuing you.
The listing of the climbs are in the same order as my old map as well as the book, Winter Dance. The order starts at the mouth of the valley and proceeds up river on the right, North side (south facing). The order then continues up river, beyond the end of the road, and then the list proceeds back down river, South side (North facing.) This has how it has always been, upriver then back down on the other side. Like a very big horseshoe. Kinda confusing for newbies when they get to Legg Creek and glass across the Valley to the Lower Bench Climbs. They are at the front of the listing, but looking across the valley to the very end of the listing.
THIS IS WHY WE CARRY A MAP.

Jon, This is a negative. I sold the last batch of a 100 or so to Sunlight Sports long ago. It is very unlikely they have any left. I contracted for 1000 copies at printing, they printed 1200. No Re-prints were ever done. The handful that I still have are not for sale.

Jason: Thanks for making this available. Have you thought about including a UTM grid overlay next time you revise it? These days almost everyone carries a cellphone with a GPS. It would be handy to be able to use UTM coordinates to locate climbs.

Hi Martin,

More than likely I won't be revisiting this map.  This map was based primarily on a personal map I had been compiling for years and I didn't have any distribution ambitions. I've spent a lot of time with map and compass, both professionally and recreationally which was the primary driver for leaving off the UTM grid.  It was an aesthetic choice. Anyhoo...
I was using my map to show some dudes from Oregon where a climb was and they encouraged me to put this out there. I've been humbled by the response and it was pretty cool to donate 30 Mussey hook-anchor sets for the local crag with the first run's proceeds.

Aaron Mulkey's guidebook will have a digital guide associated with it and will be a far superior product.

Thanks for your support.

Carlos did you get a response at all on this? I am similarly interested in getting a copy of the map if possible.
