WTF does that mean? Sexual assault is sexual assault. It's also criminal and reprehensible, including in Mexico. Don't give us that cultural BS!

I think he means his "bros from down south" routinely drug and rape him, and that he's ok with that cause they're just being "macho".

Sexual assault is never okay. But before we all grab our pitchforks and burn shit down we may want a little more than second hand rumors.

Pretty much sums it up. The family-run spots nearby are some of the friendliest I’ve been to, and are more than willing to sell you beer and cook great food.

this isnt the right topic to troll on... it just perpetuates the shitty culture of ignoring sexual assault victims...

Wow, thanks for point out and Sophia for corroborating. I know this truck and have been there before. Will definitely make sure to be careful and avoid when we go down in Thanksgiving.

An excellent incentive to party less and climb more.

The University of New Mexico is handing out coasters that could detect date-rape drugs in drinks.

PSA: The #1 date rape drug is alcohol - by a big margin. I believe that more emphasis should be put on declining extra drinks being insistently offered by sketchy people as opposed to focusing on avoiding being drugged. I believe research has shown that its rare for these drugs to show up in rape victims.

Boom. Y'all just got fucked up on knowledge!

It is never the victim’s fault for choosing to party or accept a drink. Of course, we all want to take reasonable measures to increase our safety. But everyone has a right to be able to party, climb, and generally live their life without fear of sexual assault.

I think it would be preferable if we focused less on what we imagine victims could/should do differently and more on what we can do as a community to help keep each other safe.

Why not focus on both?

I've spent all of a week in EPC, as part of an all-male group, and heard similar rumors. Given the current state of affairs in Mexico, and how often sleaze bags get away with shit in the US, I'd say chances of anything happening to the alleged perpetrator are slightly less than Trump buying Greenland.

Artem,

You don't need to feel bad about saying it - when a woman is drunk, she is more likely to be taken advantage of.  The primary responsibility of a person, man or woman, is to look out for themselves. The "community" can not be counted on to ensure your safety. Nor should you expect that.

Well at least you put community in quotes to help further illustrate your apparent disdain for anything related to a shared responsibility to look out for others

Guess I won't be drinking with you then. Where I'm from, we look out for our homies.

How about we say, "maybe nobody should be getting too inebriated to know what's going on."  Telling a woman she has to sit there and sip on a drink slowly, or not drink at all, while her male friends and men around her get shitfaced is... well... kinda shitty.

Sexual assault is 100% wrong, nearly everyone will agree.

But, do you think life is a Beastie Boy song?  "We have the right to paaaaarrrrrrtaaaaay!"

Life just doesn't work that way.  Sure, I have a right to walk through unfamiliar neighborhoods, in strange cities, in the US, in Mexico, wherever, with a bunch of cash hanging out of my pockets and nice watch, even in a neighborhood known to have thieves and thugs.  But, this would be poor judgment on my part.  Likewise, getting drunk in public places puts you at higher risk for many things including theft and sexual assault.  Sure, it sounds great that the community would watch out for you.  But, in a public place full of strangers, it may not be easy to tell if that girl getting drunk with that guy is with her husband or someone she just met.  A drunk woman can become low hanging fruit for a predator and there are many predators.

Make good choices, watch out for your friends and family.  And don't be low hanging fruit.

Artem - Thanks for elaborating on your perspective. I appreciate that it was not your intent to victim blame, but to draw attention to the way perpetrators of sexual assault use alcohol as a means to both enable and justify their actions.

FrankPS - You write "when a woman is drunk, she is more likely to be taken advantage of." Notice how the passive voice puts the emphasis on the person being assaulted rather than the person committing the assault? It suggests that sexual assault is an objective hazard, like rockfall or a thunderstorm, which may occur no matter what human beings do. It is not. Sexual assault is a human act perpetrated by someone who knows that they are exploiting another person’s vulnerability and does it anyway.

Greg D - Thanks for educating me about risks that, in 32 years of living my life as a woman, I definitely had never considered before. (/s) Also, most incidents of sexual assault are committed by people the victim knows, and often trusts.
