What happened to the new Five Ten shoes?

Rennie Putnam · · Salt Lake City, UT · Joined Nov 2011 · Points: 22

I've been eagerly awaiting the release of the new version of the Grandstone shoe from Five Ten. It's been delayed for a while, but a recent email I got from Adidas said they would be available the beginning of September. So when I googled it today, I did find them for sale. However, it wasn't on the Five Ten site, it was on the website Reahal (link below.)

They're half the normal price, and they seem to have all sizes. But seeing as the only other thing for sale on this site is a novelty watermelon slicer, I am understandably skeptical. If this is legit, how did this random website come up on a whole mess of a brand new climbing shoe model that's not even available from the manufacturer? Did part of a shipment get diverted by a shady middleman to his cousin's 3rd rate online retailer? I am confused.

Why?  I had 3 pairs of the older models, and now looking replacements.

Higher volume midfoot (much moreso), less pointed toebox, the heel is better, just don't feel as precise. They're like a lace up Hiangle or an aggressive Quantum. The VCS version has the worst strap placement I have ever seen. The lower one does almost nothing, the upper one has a metal buckle that digs into your ankle. The tongue comes up super high and just bunches up.

Thanks. This may actually be good for me. I have an extremely wide forefoot, and the high angles fit me very well. I’d love lace-up high angles.

The Hiangles are the best fitting shoe for my foot and I prefer them in almost every way to the new Dragons. The only time I have preferred the Dragon so far is on very overhanging terrain with really tiny feet and even then it coulda been psychological.

Man, that's really a bummer to hear. I was hoping that the lace-up hiangles thing would be true, because hiangles are also probably the best-fitting shoe that I've found for my foot. How's the build quality? my latest pair of hiangles are delaminating around the toe after like 2 months, which is fairly disappointing.

expecting a different shoe to fit the same as the hiangle is some kind of weird pipe dream. The original dragons fit nothing like the hiangles, and as somebody who fits into the dragons extremely well, but not the hiangles I would be very disappointed if they fit the same way....

I've been disappointed with 5:10 recently, having tried to replace old Anazazis with new ones;  the specified size (European 42.5) is far, far bigger than the old ones;  the join between the sole and the side is ragged and there is the start of a gap between the sole and the side.

I'm not saying all those 5.10's fit the same-I like that they all didn't.  With the new Dragons the toebox is fairly blunt like the Hiangles, but not as pointed as the Aleon or any of the old shoes. The volume and heel reminds me most of the Hiangle.

I'm on my second pair of quickly delaminating Hiangles. My friend ripped the heel on his new Dragons in 3 sessions- the rubber strip around the back fell off. In talking with climbers the past few weeks everyone has had some sort of problem and their warranty is extremely slow now. I am thinking of switching to Tenaya or UP.

Seconding this. I've blown through 4 pairs of Quantums in the past year and a half... I haven't complained too much since a new pair has been almost as cheap as a resole ($60-$70), but the exploding toes (one pair started delaminating after only 3 gym sessions) combined with how quickly they lose their stiffness is really disappointing. I did get a pair warrantied, but I had to ship the shoes back and it was a pain.

I keep buying them because they fit my feet so well, but they are nowhere near the quality of any of my 'old' Five Ten shoes. The retail price seems particularly absurd when compared to the quality of any Sportiva shoes I've owned.

My Anasazis are still going strong on their second resole.  Think they’re like a year or two old?  Still have my Blancos from when they first came out in the new iteration.  Just finally got a pair of Teams recently and they’re amazing.  YMMV I guess?

So, I saw that one pair of the new Grandstones in my size (42) listed on the Adidas website, and they were on sale for 30% off during the Labor Day sale, so I figured I'd place an order and see what happened. I fully expected to get an email saying that the page wasn't supposed to be up and my order was refunded, but a few days later I got a shipping notification and today the shoes arrived! Very early impressions, having only worn them in my apartment:
1) The toe box is much less boxy than it looked in the initial photos I saw online. Still not quite as low-profile as my TC Pros, but fairly flat.
2) The fit is fairly similar to Quantums (which fit me great). I wear a 41 in TC Pros and these are as small or smaller.
3) The build quality at least feels pretty solid. There's more rubber over the toes than TCs and it _feels_ like they'll be less likely to delaminate than every pair of TC Pros I've ever had, but of course time will tell.
4) My initial impression is that they're a little bit less stiff out of the box than TC Pros and much less stiff than Blancos, but they're still pretty stiff. Very curious if they lose their rigidity like Quantums or stay together.

I'll be trying them out in the Gunks on Sunday and can update once I've actually taken them up a few pitches.

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but Five Ten is discontinuing the Quantum.

Per their customer service,

"We have a new Hiangle coming out next spring so along with that and the new Dragons, they decided they did not need the Quantum any longer"

I'm stocking up.

I just got a pair and immediately it was my favorite, just over the Hiangle. But, if the hingle gets an update, then hopefully it surpasses both.

doubt it since the hi angle is soft and the quantum is stiff

Quantums are stiff out of the box and 3 months later they're like Moccs
