STOLEN bolting kit from Universal Wall

Yesterday someone stole a red Arcteryx FL 45 backpack filled with my bolting gear from the base of my new route (at the bottom of my fixed line hidden behind snow) on the Universal Wall up at Mt Charleston. It included my new Hilti drill with a battery, a left handed Petzl Ascender, a black Petzl Helmet with an Arcteryx sticker on the top of it, a red Arcteryx Harness, a black Yates aid climbing bag with a bunch of glue stuck to it, my yellow gri gri with a metolius locker and a bunch of other stuff like bolts, wrenches, cleaning stuff, etc.

It is heartbreaking to me to imagine someone in the climbing community taking this stuff but many of my friends think it was likely a member of the Vegas crowd.

PLEASE let me know if you see any of this stuff for sale or notice a buddy has just gotten a whole new set up. This was a massive financial hit to me, and today was literally the final day of bolting on a route I have been slaving over for weeks to finish.

I worked on the route until almost dark on Friday, rested yesterday (Sat) and then went back today (Sunday) to find it gone.

If anyone has any info please do share.

Super lame!  Ugh.  Just that drill is a painful amount of $.  Sorry to hear about this.

I had a large amount of well hidden bolts, hangers, etc stolen from a wall near there last year.  Given where I left them (Also for less than 48hrs), it’s hard to imagine it wasn’t a climber, but it hurt to believe that too.

Hope you find your gear!

That's pretty terrible, never condone stealing....

But hows this fixed rope situation been up there lately? Has that GARBAGE thats been hanging off of universal wall for years finally been removed?? Above Sesame?

What about the wall deep into Lee Canyon with 4 bleached fixed ropes hanging for 4 years near mummy's nose??

PITY THE FOOL who ripped you off. If it was a personal attack, I suggest just replacing all your gear right away and let it go as soon as possible so you minimize any internal damage this entity was trying to inflict on you. If it was some random opportunist, I suggest the same course of action. Forgive and forget, easy come, easy go, right? Harboring anger would be the worst possible outcome here. Good luck dude, you're a legend!!

Several people have suggested that. I have no idea who that is - can you tell me more?

Man, yeah, I feel the same. Could it have been a ranger somehow? I have a call into the Visitor center. But yeah I've spent weeks and weeks working on my routes up there and barely seen anyone - and no one that wasn't a climber. Thanks man

Can't speak to Lee Canyon stuff. I remove all of my ropes as soon as I am done with equipping. I will hopefully have my stuff down tomorrow after I borrow some gear and finish the job.

Thanks Karl, yeah I figure it's a big ass waste of time to be pissed off. Plus I am way more focused on just finishing the line and climbing it, opening it up to the community! I lined up a kit to borrow and will finish business today hopefully. thanks again

  1. This makes me sick. I would love to donate sum cash for a new kit. I know other vegas climbers that would also. Please let's help him out. Maybe a donation box at r2c2 and desert rock. We need to get him a new kit

I was up at sesame street yesterday morning and did not see your gear at the base of your route.

the line looks great btw, is it sport multipitch? what is the grade?

Good luck locating your gear, Jonathan. Really awful that someone would take your gear off a project. Members of the tribe are generally very grateful for our hard labor putting up new routes.
I know that I haven't slept very well on the few occasions that I've left gear cached on a new project.

Thanks Gerson, the thing is that my bag was tucked behind the snow so it should have been impossible to see unless you really went right up to the fixed line.

The new route is entirely bolted yes, 6 pitches, probably around 13a. I will put it on MP when it's finished (hopefully tomorrow!)

Man thanks for the thought, it's hugely appreciated! A couple friends have already been really helpful and honestly I am happy to pay for the rest. The donation box should be for the SNCC! I will piece together a new kit no worries. Seriously thanks so much for the thought!

Man this is such a bummer!  Hopefully you get your gear back.  Theft is pretty much as low as it gets.
On a brighter note...STOKED to hear about this climb you've put up!

Jonathan, this is  Dan Y over at Desert Rock Sports. I think your bag and gear was just dropped off at the shop. Stop by at your convenience and ID it and it's back!

I picked up my backpack with all of the bolting gear intact this afternoon from DRS. I don’t know the precise story of how / why it ended up there but I’m really grateful to have my stuff back! Thanks everyone!

I also sent my new route yesterday so it’s all open and chalked up! I’ll put it on MP here soon. It’s an awesome route.
