Looking at heading to the Dacks over July 4th. Will be in the High Peaks and/or Keene region. Any update on black flies? I know they can be beyond bad this time of year but I have also seen them die off by July in other years.

Black flies were not that bad last weekend. Wear pants and bring a light long sleeve in case. Otherwise DEET it up baby!

All the black flies in the world couldn't stop me from romping around the Dacks.

But yeah I don't think it has been terrible.

I would guess they are probably still active this year, late start I think; however, I havent been to the daks in a few weeks.

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll go for it. Been itching, no pun intended, to get back to Wallace.

Been out to beer walls, cascade lake, and up to Algonquin/Wright/Iroquois in the last week, no black flies sighted.  Tons of mosquitos, but they’re manageable.

You've been to wallface recently? Or just projecting it being bad?

Was hiking at Pharoah Lake yesterday. Hiked the entire 12 mile loop with only a few short breaks because the mosquitos would devour us whenever we stopped. Horrible.

Yup - just finished a couple nights backpacking (avalanche pass, avalanche lake, mt Colden, etc) and the same thing - the only place free of constant mosquitos was the peak.  Flies were out too, but only mildly.

Has anyone been to the high peaks recently? Wallace? How’s the bug situation?

Was just up in keene valley a couple of weeks ago, and I’d say the bugs were present (it’s summertime, after all), but not nearly as bad as people have been making it out to be.
