A cautionary tale: I was silly enough to think that the REI parking lot off expo parkway was a safe enough place to leave my vehicle for a few days while at lover's leap. It was not. My window was smashed in and 1/2 my rack was stolen. If anyone happens across a posting selling climbing gear from someone who doesn't seem to know what they're talking about please let me know! Any leads would be hugely appreciated.

LPT: use your spare tire area to store valuables if leaving the car for awhile. You can fit quite a bit in there even if you have a spare, if you carry a full size on the outside then you have a massive tyre well to fill with stuff.

I was just in there last night and made sure to bring my laptop into the store with me while shopping. Definitely not too far from som higher crime areas. Sorry you got your gear stolen.

Was your rack visible from the window?

I had a buddy who went shopping at REI and had some stuff in his car (unlocked) that got stolen. REI seems to be the last place you would want to park.

- Sorry to hear. This location is right next to the river, a pathway and campground for the Homeless. Homeless camps are everywhere. I work on that side of the free way not more than a 3 minute drive from there. I see homeless riding around on higher end bikes all around that area. There is a guy and girl that beg on the corner I saw using iPhone 8+ while coloring their signs at the Starbucks. Several homeless I have seen with nice camping and climbing gear (headlamps and such). I hate to say it, but the gear probably is being traded around in that world. The police finally found my REI mountain bike frame I bought from there after two years of it being stolen. The rest of the bike was gone, just the frame and registered serial number was at a homeless dude's camp that they had to move.
I feel your pain.. I am sorry.

Sorry that sucks. Check on craigslist or pawnshops.
I usually park in a residential area halfway between two houses. So each house thinks it's a guest at the other persons home. Or park in a hotel overflow lot if you won't get towed. Parking overnight at a commercial area where cars wouldn't be expected at night is a last resort.

Yeah my office is right across the freeway from there. We've had several people during the middle of the day drill holes in people's gas tanks to steal gas. And people are mugged regularly. It's going to get much worse soon because of the state fair. I was just checking on Craigslist for climbing gear and there's basically nothing on there.

Sorry you had your stuff stolen. As csproul mentioned, that area of town is fairly sketchy. I've seen used needles in the parking lot behind the REI. Hey, M Thanks for the thought! I've abandoned ship at this point. Happy climbing.

Bummer! That’s my local REI. A bit sketch part of town for sure. On the other hand, people have had their cars broken into and stuff stolen at the Lovers Leap parking lot too. Although of the two (besides the parking fee) I’d probably want to park at LL. Sorry for ya, I’ve gotten stuff ripped off out of my backyard and I’m in a supposedly “good” neighborhood. Faces of fucking meth.

Broke the little rear side window. He had a ton more stuff so they were quick about it and only took the rope.
This happens quite a bit there so, keep your gear with you and your car empty and cleaned of anything that might have value. People will break in for the most minor of thing if they can see it sitting there.
Climbed there about a week or so ago and was pretty scketched out about the sheer amount of broken glass on that curve!!!! My partner didn't flintch and left his spanking new tacoma parked out there with all our gear for the Leap in the camper shell. Thankfully nothing happened. Right when we parked a lady and a younger gal pulled up putting up Missing persons signs there of a young girl who's been missing for months, presumed dead. Told us the Gorge might have been where she was last seen. Considering the climbing there is 1 star at best doubt we'll ever be going back.
