How are the bugs in Rumney at the end of May? Looking to get up there next week before Memorial Day. Thank you!

Getting bad ... be prepared. Last weekend the skeeters were everywhere. Have not seen black flies ... YET ...!

Black flies and mosquitoes are everywhere and vicious. be prepared with deet and skin covering layers, and still be driven out of the woods. Also, ticks are out and numerous,

The bugs are out but nothing that should keep you from climbing. Cover up and buy some "white mountain insect repellent. I think you'll have more issues fighting off the gym rats.

They were starting to be more present last week. Honestly have not been an issue while climbing. While belaying on the other hand....
Lots of ticks this year. I flicked a few off 2 weekends ago and this last weekend I found one just chilling on a climb questing.
TL;DR: It is New England in the spring...

When do the bugs go away? August/Sept? or longer?

The lack of bugs is more of a mindset than a reality ;). The bugs are pretty populated but for me have been less annoying than usual for this time of year. Mosquito's don't really go away until the winter comes, but black flies tend to fade out in July/August and deerflies a bit later than that. Ticks are present all year, but worse early season IMHO. Ice season has no bugs though, I have seen the lone sad mosquito in the act of dying a long drawn out theatrical death, but I actively wanted to give that bug my blood... In summary, worst of it should be over by August. Mosquito's just don't quit until October/November. If you don't like bugs swing tools.

If you think there are less bugs at Rumney, it's only because there are more people to feast on. I climbed last weekend at a much more secluted area and the bugs drove us off after a few hours and a bottle of bug spray. We were the only people there and they spread the word fast!

Farley is better than Rummey is better than North Conway is better than Clifton. The further north you go ,the worse the bugs are.
