Fall from 2nd Flatiron [video; somewhat disturbing]

I got a DM from Kyle. It wasn't very nice. I'm one of the few that's not degrading him as a naive human being and a liar, and he still hated me. I explained to him that I was trying to stick up for him. He's a kid. His grammar is unrefined. He can't decipher consolation from my ideas, which empathized. Y'all have ruined him lol! And maybe his accident. Now, he can't look up to any of us. . He wants to hit n' run now!

Never stop being you. You are la Crème de la Crème of MP.

One of my friends once slipped on the east face of The Slab (another flatiron) and managed to catch himself before tumbling. I doubt he told more than 3 or 4 people what had happened, and he certainly didn't post it on the internet. I don't think Kyle is currently in the correct headspace to acknowledge what mistakes were made. It seems like he has a few months of recovery, and hopefully he will sober up and become a respected member of the climbing community. We all have mistakes we made when we started climbing that we can laugh at now.

His hoosier ass knows correct grammar; I believe he uses incorrect grammar as part of his MP character.

I am with the haters in almost every respect but that road cycling burn was truly inspired. So I’m on team Kyle now.

I think this has been said already...  But a fall of that magnitude which resulted in so many broken bones probably caused some concussive trauma, not to mention acute PTSD.  I would take everything the young man says post accident with a grain of salt?

Given content here, I am not surprised a 26 year old would react the way folks are now indicating he is.

Whoa.  Dude is 26 ???   I thought it was a kid.
No chicks for him.

I do give Kyle points for the roadie burn. And for putting the fall video in the comedy category on youtube. His profile here is pretty good too.

Glad you survived Kyle, hope you learned something and find a partner to share a rope with.

The commenting here is likely fueled by a mix of shock at Kyle's hubris, concern, and maybe a little bit of people reassuring themselves that they will be OK because they are different.

I found it a bit comforting as someone who logs literally miles of rock in the Flatirons every year. [...] it helps to know that many of the cases where it does [go wrong] involve incredible lack of foresight or experience or both.

Damn you guys are rough. What he did was incredibly stupid and he is paying the consequences for that. He is obviously young (to me 26 is young, and some 26 year olds are 'younger' than others) and very new to climbing. He's not reacting the way you want him to - grateful for you pointing out that he f'ed up, admitting he was stupid. Maybe he is actually internalizing some of this but being defensive in the moment. Maybe not.

Either way, going after him the way some have reflects on your characters just as much as you think Kyle's responses reflect on his.

Since Helen hasn't chimed in, I'll do it. I think it is time to invoke SPrice: Everyone you meet is going through something you know nothing about. Be kind, Always.

What we have here is a classic case of the Dunning-Kruger effect:

In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence.

Hard to believe this is real.  Is anybody sure it wasn’t staged? Talked to Kylie?  I just dont get it.

This video is very hard to watch. So much suffering.

He did get rescued and he did take the fall. I guess it's whether or not he willingly tossed himself down the second. My vote is he was just inexperienced and cocky from all the hard 5.8s he's sent in the gym

Yea he got seriously messed up. But at 26 years old he should know better than to try to emulate a movie, especially one about an elite climber doing something incredibly dangerous.

Love me a good tumble

I mean aside from the obvious trolling he's doing now, that made me chuckle

No second lap?

Heal up bro and thanks for the share. Hope you stick the landing next time. I took one longer than that once although hitting some ledges made for less impact even though there was more hits. I laughed when I later saw Homer Simpson do the same as me, although he said DOH multiple times and I was quickly knocked unconscious. Regardless, it helped me figure the process out although Gopros had not been invented as it was @ 45 years back when this occurred. I had a lot of holes in my knowledge which I was not aware of. Really, but ironed them out over time. Anyway, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE HERE, glad it looks like you'll be ok in a bit, that's a rough hit to take. PS, good looking pup.

Is this a joke?  Do you really need us to explain why climbing a tall and steep piece of rock without a rope is a dumb decision for someone without experience doing so?

Do you all really think that the recently-created Mountain Project profile is actually him, and not just a random troll?

I mean, let's be honest.  Even climbing a tall and steep piece of rock *with* a rope is a dumb decision, all things considered.  Climbing has risks, after all, and you're not exactly climbing for the sake of your own survival.

Yes, because at the same time as he started posting here on MP, he changed the description on his YouTube video. It was updated to clarify his confusion over the grade, complain about the criticism, and it included a link to this thread. It has since been changed again
