Holy crap!!!!
Glad everyone was ok.
Big rockfall on second pitch of Hair City.
In the choss band.
Party below.
Be careful in that area. I would suspect that there is more that will come down.
It was large.
Incredible no-one was hurt/killed.
That zone should be checked ASAP for loose rock that is perched.
It showed the base and was all over the road when stopped.
I was across canyon.
Heard it and screaming.
Shower of bowling balls.

Damn, I did Hair City yesterday. Nothing seemed imminently ready to go. Assuming it was below the roof at the start of P2?

You kids have something to learn.

Hair has the tendency to fall out!

I second J's question.

Any update on this? Is there some hangfire waiting to go?  Or just typical Eldo choss?

This is most likely April Fools joke, nothing of sorts that the OP is describing on Hair City

There was a ton of loose rock at the start of P2 of hair city a week or two ago. It was a large section at the start of the roof, a huge section that was probably used as a foothold for a long time on the left. I’m guessing that may have been it - doesn’t seem to be an April fool’s joke from what I hear, but there are a few people going to check it out tomorrow to see if they have to close to road to trundle stuff on Monday.

Settle down peppy.  The verdict is definitely not in.

From the Bastille? That is an impressive rock fall!

100% not a troll.  I typed up a detailed account of the event, went to post and an "error" occurred and did not post.  Not feeling the energy to do the in depth account again, so here is a quicker version.

The rock fall occurred on Tuesday April 2nd on Hair City from the rotten rock band beneath the roof on pitch 2 at roughly 2pm.   I led pitch one, my partner led pitch 2.  I am always a bit skeptical of the many rotten rock bands I have climbed through in Eldo, but they have never failed.  I used a large bulge like hold with my left hand.  The large bulge of rock was front and center and clearly had been used numerous times, I felt no indication of looseness in the hold.  Just before I could grab  the next hold with my right hand, a whole section of the rock band encompassing the hold in my left hand crumbled away from the wall.  It is not so much that the hold broke, rather a section of wall crumbled.  As I fell, massive boulders showered down to the base of Hair City, onto the road and splashed into the river.  I instinctually yelled "ROCK" multiple times, I heard a scream from somewhere, then heard climbers from the base of Red Garden calling out if everyone was alright.  I indicated I was OK, attempted to survey the situation best I could from where I was.   In a shocked state, I couldn't come up with any other action than to get back on the wall and climb to the top of the route. I don't recall noting more rock that felt ready to go, but I certainly was anxious to get through that band as I climbed up.

I will not attempt to put into words my relief that no one was injured.

I witnessed the rockfall with climberz from the base of genesis and was astonished and grateful that no one was hurt.

Numerous toaster sized rocks fell, along with smaller debris. During the fall somebody was soloing the bastille crack, and another was leading P1 of hair city. I'd like to hear their story.

J Thomson and I were on Hair City on Tuesday April 2nd at around 4:30pm, absolutely no signs of rockfall anywhere. Are you sure you have your date/time correct?

Just because you 2 brilliant people didn’t see signs of rockfall doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Rockfall down a steep face may not leave much evidence. And the base is already littered with debris. So, if you weren’t looking for it, is it possible you missed it. Go back and have a closer look. And retract the douche comment while you’re at it. Climberz is a stand up guy.

100% sure about date and location. Probably closer to 1:15pm.  By the time I hiked down the evidence of the rock fall was already minimal...a couple impact marks on some large boulders, some divots in the road.

Woah, gnarly! Glad everyone is OK.

I have never climbed Hair City, how far is it from Blind Faith?  That was my first 5.10 lead.

I see that my skepticism has triggered a nerve with you, Greg. I have absolutely nothing to gain here by denying that this rockfall occurred, but please allow me to lay out my perspective here.

Given the OP's description of the rockfall in the first post on this thread, one would conclude that said rockfall was quite the doozy, no?

"It showed(sic) the base and was all over the road when stopped."
"Shower of bowling balls"
"It was large"
"That zone should be checked ASAP for loose rock that is perched"
"Be careful in that area. I would suspect that there is more that will come down "

Sounds like a huge rockfall from this description, correct? Well, J and I climbed the route 3 hours after Dan Griffiths claimed it happened, and there were absolutely no signs whatsoever that something like that had happened recently, much less earlier that same afternoon. Would 3 hours be enough for somebody to clean up the road and the route from such a large fall? And of course we weren't looking for rockfall evidence at the time, however, wouldn't something so large be pretty hard to miss? I have a hard time believing both me and partner wouldn't notice bowling ball sized rocks all over the road and loose dirt/pebbles/sand/grit all over the route. There was none of that.

OP started the thread on Wednesday. Judging from the way it's written, one would conclude the incident happened on the same day as the post (Wednesday). I was on Hair City on Tuesday. Dan Griffiths claims the fall happened on Tuesday. Something isn't adding up here.

I'm not denying that a rockfall occurred. It very well could have. However, given the evidence from my perspective, I have come to the conclusion either a)it happened on Wednesday afternoon and not Tuesday afternoon as Dan says; b)the rockfall was not nearly as catastrophic as OP made it out to be; c) both a and b.

I welcome any civil retort from anybody (pics would really help). I would also like to call on Greg to leave the condescending attitude out of it, but this is mtn proj after all, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The date is for sure. The extent of “catastrophic” is subjective for sure. Not the kind of catastrophic that alters the park.  Not the kind of clean up requiring heavy machinery. It was the kind of catastrophic that made you say “holy s$&t” if you were anywhere nearby....crashing echoed through the canyon.  It was the kind of catastrophic that could have easily resulted in serious injury or fatality even if wearing a helmet. The kind of catastrophic that made you immediately concerned for someone’s wellbeing.

Hard to quantify mass of rock that fell. 75 lbs - 100lbs??  I don’t know, but it was significant...but again that is a subjective term. It was shocking for sure. I don’t doubt you would have not noticed anything if you climbed the route later that day.
