Little early for Halletts chimney, best time if conditions allow is late May into early June

Heads up everyone! I was up at designator/ fang staircase area in Vail yesterday and an avalanche ripped down the approach trail in the afternoon. Definitely big enough to bury and kill a person. Over the last 11 years ice climbing in vail I've seen almost every climb up there slide. Consider wearing a beacon and carrying a shovel. Be safe out there!

Definitely wear a beacon and carry a shovel/probe right now, if there is ANY risk of avalanche. And if you leave your pack at the base when you climb, secure it so if the route launches you will still have your rescue tools. Trust me when I say a helmet and crampons are poor tools for moving heavy snow rapidly.

Was this just snow that was on the trail? Or something overhead that broke and came down?

there are spots on the approach to the main amphitheater and as stated above most climbs that can slide in the right conditions.

I did not see where the slide came from. I was over on the staircase when it happened. Some people were on the designator when it slide and were showing us pictures in the parking lot.

I saw a photo online from a few days ago. It looked like it was in good shape then.
