Will I use a 5 and 6 cam climbing in NC and other adjoining states?

Do you want to climb big cracks?

Never placed while on the sharp end and I really dont think you'll need them unless if your route calls for it but of all the cams sold on MP 5s and 6s are always the cleanest and most unused

Thanks man.  I noticed they are always shiny.  And I was pretty sure I didn't see any on the racks of the NC guys I've been out with.

I used a 5-6 this fall for the first time in years and didn't really need it since the 4 went in right below it. It was fun still.

When a route calls for a 5 or 6 usually nothing else will work...

if you know of routes you want/plan on climbing that call for the big gear cool.  I wouldn't buy them just to have them.

I like owning a 5 but do not own a 6, but I also don't live in NC.  Can't imagine not having a 4 these days.

I've used my 5 a several times but the six only maybe twice. I only take them when I know for sure I need it. Depends what you want to climb. There's a nice long 5.7 at Moore's that takes a 5 pretty well, although it's fairly easy terrain it'd be way runout without and the 5 can take the sting out of a few others like Breaking Rocks Is Hard to Do. I've used it on several routes at the New.

That said there is a killer deal on those sizes now...

I currently own two 5s, one 6 and valley giant 9. I have placed them all in lead. Know your route. Big cams are the only gear you get on many classic routes.

Chris, my NC exp. is just a handful of trips to the Bald and Looking Glass, more Chatt area exp. and I’d say no. There’s plenty to do w/o them. I’d rather have doubles in cams small/med., along w/ tricams, hexes & nuts. Unless you’re leading hard trad, skip all the passive pro and get cams.

you will only need one occasionally so just borrow it....

Do you need one? No.
Will you use one? If you have one, you'll find a way.

Big cams and small brass:  Love to have them, hate to use them.

Pratt's Crack, Steck-Salathe, The Yawn, Deimos, Hair Shirt, Traveler Buttress, Ahab... Yes, I need one! Oh, do YOU need one? Meh. Who cares?

For NC and surrounding states? No.

edit: I've climbed in NC, TN, AL, GA for 10 years. Never needed anything larger than a 4, Though I'm sure you could find a route somewhere that could take one.

I cant speak for NC, but in my part of the country, beta will often state type of rack needed... a standard route up to a #4; double set from #1-#3; or an extra #3...  rarely do I see any need for gear above a #4 unless I wanted to impress my friends by hanging it on my rack or lived elsewhere.

Hard to pass up the current 25% sale on #5-6 Camalots though, I am tempted... can’t speak for you, but for me, I’d be better off spending money on doubling up or replacing gear I would actually use.

If you want to climb offwidths or routes that need them; go for it or climb with someone that already has the gear to see if you even like it. Otherwise spend your money elsewhere.

Yesterday I didn't feel an urgent need to add some bigger cams to my rack.... until i saw this  https://www.mountainsteals.com/product/black-diamond-c4-camalot_10002959
You can use code MJ8577RS for an extra 10% off which makes them over 50% off.
