We went for a walk in Calico Hills and it rained lightly on us around 1:30PM. Lots of sign of wetness all around (puddles, wet sand). Hopefully the rest of the climbing community is more respectful than the good colonel.
Drove from Michigan to spend the holidays with family and get some climbing in with my son. Unfortunately, the rain on Christmas is going to mean no climbing on this trip. We will just have to come back another time.
Hey y’all, So we were planning on coming January 3rd-8th still coming obviously since tickets are non refundable. But I don’t see our government getting their stuff together anytime soon. Soooooo two questions
1. What’s the deal with the backed up double lane traffic? Is it super busy because no one’s charging entry? Or just no one can figure out where to go without someone to direct them or what?
2. We planned on camping, but if Lovell is packed when we get there, where’s the closest hotel that we’re unlikely to pick up bed bugs or be murdered in?
1. Is a combination of holiday tourist traffic and lack of entrance fee. Rangers are not there to enforce parking so cars are lined up along the road at the first pull out. It's a shame that now there are large groups trampling around off trail there.
2. Be prepared for colder temps than the valley, depending on how high up Lovell road you have to go. Maybe you can get a good rate at red rock casino after new year's eve.

1) Go early, which you would want to anyway if you have certain popular climbs in mind. With the gates being open 24/7, go at sunrise and use the approach to warmup. ;-)
2) You'd have to seek out something real seedy. When in doubt go with a franchise like Best Western, La Quinta, etc. It doesn't guarantee a great stay, but at least reduces the likelihood of issues. Franchises try to maintain an image and consistency between locations. Check travel sites for deals.

I've stayed at Bonnie Springs before. It's expensive compared with the Sunday-Thursday rates you can get elsewhere in town, but starts looking good relative to weekend prices.
I changed the title of this forum thread. Originally this thread was started to provide information about the limited Red Rock operating hours on Christmas Day, but the discussion has drifted toward the ongoing federal government shut-down.
Looks like RR is receiving some precipitation, can't tell if it is rain or snow. However, no measurable precipitation is shown on the NOAA site. Any boots on the ground reports?

Was planning on climbing there this weekend, NOAA claims it'll be 42* and sunny on Saturday though, obviously being in the sun makes a huge difference - but do ya'll locals usually like to climb in those temps?
Does anyone know if the gate for the scenic loop is operating at normal hours? (Closes at 5pm) Or is it not closed at night due to the government shutdown?
