I heard they are considering mandatory helmets for lead climbers too.

I asked PG Belmont's manager last night about it. He said it's included in their waiver that people choose or decline to use a helmet, and that the gym will not consider making it mandatory. Now I wonder if Tradiban was just joking about it and I took it seriously :)

Insurance doesn't specificly require the Gri, they just tell you that so you stop asking questions.

The insurance company wants to see consistency in policy and clear safety protocol. However the gym can achieve that is up to them.

It’s also a lot easier for the staff to tell if people are properly belaying if everyone is using the same devices.

No one understands climbing gear like insurance companies.  I was calling my agent the other day to see if I could increase my term life coverage and he was like "do you use screamers on fixed heads?"  They really know their stuff...

LOL, that reminds of getting insurance a couple years ago. The woman doing the interview asked if I climbed mountains.
I asked if she meant stuff like Everest and Denali. She said yes.
A week later, someone called to ask why I’d lied about climbing. I replied that I had not lied, I wasn’t asked about rock climbing...

Perhaps they should budget more than 10 minutes for teaching someone how to belay?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
