Is there any climable ice yet? I'm going to be on Christmas break in a few days and might be skiing in the Tahoe area. I have my own gear (except screws) but I've never climbed ice before. If anyone wants to teach me to ice climb that would be super awesome.

It's been pretty warm this week. I haven't checked, but I doubt it.

Alyssa K wrote:Don’t let the CA ice climbing cynics get you down. Tahoe actually has some fantastic ice and I’ve literally never seen multiple parties climbing at the same time. Caveats: you generally have to hike to get the goods (although there’s an incredible roadside formation on the west shore!!), and it’s fickle and very much dependent on sustained cold snaps. Sure, sometimes you posthole uphill both ways for 2 hours to find nothing but slush, but that’s the trade off to CA ice climbing. Last year I was climbing this roadside gem in March so it ain’t all bad! Any update on this climb? Looks like a blast!

Today, I was out at whiskey cliffs/sunny falls, some of whiskey is climbable, looks like it’ll take screws. Some pretty legit looking mixed lines right now. Sunny falls was thin/chandeliery, but again - it’ll take screws if you look for it.

I just read on Summitpost that “as of the writing of this, roadside ice is closed”, but it looks like it’s a few years old. Anyone know if this is still the case? If so, I apologize for climbing/posting about it. Not trying to step on anyone’s toes or ruin it for everyone.
