Trango Vergo Recall

Vergo hand positioning feels natural to me.
Cinch hand positioning also feels natural to me.

Depends on how you hold it. If you hold the Cinch the same way you're supposed to hold the Vergo, then both are equally easy / hard to override. The way you are supposed to use the devices are virtually completely identical except that the cinch doesent have the nice 'put your thumb here' indicator and the notch for your fingers on the back. However, you can still put your thumb on the hole on the Cinch and use the exact same belaying technique for the Cinch as the Vergo.

Anyway, it's about the person using the device, not the device itself. I went through four Cinches over the years, catching probably close to 750 lead falls on them. I have never dropped anyone or come close to dropping anyone but I have caught a few big ass whips on the Cinch including one near-factor-2 fall on it. I did fall past 10 bolts on a sport route once though because my partner held the cam open and it took her awhile before she let go. Fortunately I was 140' up and the route was steep.... I have also been dropped on a GriGri though so again, it's the person more than the device.

Asked Trango about the Vergo a few days ago and got this reply (which isn't very helpful):

"We are going to be making an announcement soon on the Vergo!
(Don’t worry, its not getting canceled.)"

In contrast, it is scary easy to do so with a cinch- as many folks have discovered (including a local recently who, as I understand it, is still in the hospital weeks after his 50' crater from 5 bolts up).

I agree. The changes to the Vergo faceplate/clam were needed imo

Do any of you guys have some mild surface rust on the back of your vergo?

You'd have to ask Trango to take a look at mine.

Not a big deal at all. Still catching whips every day.

If you hold the cinch like this, I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to override the cam.

My post-first-recall Vergo had some about two weeks from when it first arrived.

I have it on good authority that the Vergo is slated to relaunch this fall.

They are turning out to be so unreliable in their predictions that I wouldn't count on what they say.

That's why you buy two, one to return and the other to hold onto while their right hand figures out what the left is doing.

Wow!

Dear Valued Customer,
Over the past few months, we have received quite a few questions from climbers regarding the status of the Vergo belay device.
One of the most frequent questions we receive is when will the Vergo be back on the market?
We are happy to report that we have completed our testing and evaluation and are in the process of producing the components. Once our initial production runs are completed, we will have more information on the Vergo's release date, which we currently anticipate to be Fall 2018.
Trango takes the design and safety of our products very seriously and our product design and manufacturing teams have, in addition to resolving the handle issue, reviewed and analyzed all aspects of the Vergo. This has been a structured, thorough, detailed, and time consuming process, but our main concern is the safety of our climbers and to make sure the redesigned Vergo meets the demands that are placed on it.
Thank you for your patience during this process.
The Trango Team

Having held onto my post 1st recall and pre 2nd recall Vergo, I'm looking forward to sending my pre2nd recall version in for a brand new Vergo once they come back out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
