Beginner Classes around NY

I'm looking for classes to learn about anchor building, lead belaying, gear placement, etc. Any recommendations? I live 10 minutes from the Powerlinez in Harriman and I'm willing to drive ~2 hours on any weekend.

It seems like REI has some classes in the area (St John's Ledges and Allamuchy Park), does anyone know if these are any good?

You’re much closer to all the guides in the Gunks. Any reason you want a class over a guide that can show you the same without traveling?

REI is reputable but can be expensive depending on what you’re looking at.

Not sure who REI contracts out to for these classes, but Alpine Endeavors, Mountain Skills Climbing Guides, HighXposure Adventures, and Eastern Mountain Sports all provide these classes in the Gunks with (usually) high quality instructors.

No particular reason, I didn't know that was an option. Any experience required to climb with a guide? And how much can I expect to get through in one session, or should I focus on one thing per day?

Thanks for the suggestions Gregory, I'll check those out.

All of the groups listed above offer guiding services. No experience needed, they’ll tailor the day to your skill level.

I can’t answer how much you’ll get through sorry. That depends on your experience and how fast or slow you pick things up.

I have personal experience with Mountain Skills.
They are a highly reputable guide service in New Paltz.
Depending on your experience and what you are looking for they will be able to provide.

REI is also now guiding legally at Peterskill; might want to drop them a line, and see what’s up. REI.com/learn, or Newyork-os@rei.com

Sorry I  waited,

Appalachian Mountain Cub,(the AMC) Over many decades many climbers have gotten a great start through the mentor-ship  that can be found at the AMC.
as well as partners to practice with  which can add volumes to the lessons. Then leave you already knowing that crew of climbers.

I have worked with the EMS Gunks school on several occasions and they did a great job. It was just guided climbing for TWA groups, so they received limited instruction, but their demeanor and professionalism was top-notch. Plus, would you rather learn at Allamuchy or the Gunks?

Any of the guides in NY are going to be top quality. Guiding companies have to be accredited to operate in NY (which is not the case in many states in the west).

Not any more.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
