Beginner Classes around NY

I'm looking for classes to learn about anchor building, lead belaying, gear placement, etc. Any recommendations? I live 10 minutes from the Powerlinez in Harriman and I'm willing to drive ~2 hours on any weekend. |

You’re much closer to all the guides in the Gunks. Any reason you want a class over a guide that can show you the same without traveling? |

Not sure who REI contracts out to for these classes, but Alpine Endeavors, Mountain Skills Climbing Guides, HighXposure Adventures, and Eastern Mountain Sports all provide these classes in the Gunks with (usually) high quality instructors. |

Any experience required to climb with a guide? And how much can I expect to get through in one session, or should I focus on one thing per day? Thanks for the suggestions Gregory, I'll check those out. |

All of the groups listed above offer guiding services. No experience needed, they’ll tailor the day to your skill level. |

I have personal experience with Mountain Skills. |

REI is also now guiding legally at Peterskill; might want to drop them a line, and see what’s up. REI.com/learn, or Newyork-os@rei.com |

Sorry I waited,
The Ct Chapter is very active, an hour45, minute drive from Morristown NJ & does these - No pre- registration, Short Notice, GET SOME! |

I have worked with the EMS Gunks school on several occasions and they did a great job. It was just guided climbing for TWA groups, so they received limited instruction, but their demeanor and professionalism was top-notch. Plus, would you rather learn at Allamuchy or the Gunks? |
