Buddy just got a new pair about a month ago and they got a tear on the first crack he used them on. Definitely not the same moccasym that they used to be.
Pic below: they look a little ratty because he wrapped tape around them to get by for the rest of the day.

I'm getting something similar in some Moccs that I bought a month ago. It's as if the red material is just unravelling.

Is there another option in light of this quality control? Or lack of. Too many of you have the same story, it doesn't sound like the random thin spot in the leather like I'd assumed. It sounds like the shoes have turned to junk.
Evolve Addicts seem like a straight copy. I've had some real problems with build quality on their synthetic shoes but I've never tried their leather.
20+ years ago I had a pair of Boreal Ninja's I liked. I'm a better climber now and the Ninja isn't the same shoe. I don't know if I'd still like it. Is it still basically the same or even improved?
Any other leather slippers out there?

Any other leather slippers out there? Yeah, this is unfortunate. Especially if Adidas doesn't take care of their existing customers with problems and correct the issue in the shoe. The Evolv Addicts are close to the same, but a more asymmetric shoe which will fit some, and not others. My friend tried both and prefered the Moccasym's as more comfortable even though they have Egyptian type toe profile. My one impression of dealing with the resole company that Evolv runs is that they take care of their customers if there is problems with the shoe. I've otherwise never used Evolv so can't help you with build quality experience.
Other slippers are: La Sportiva Maverink and the soon to be available Cobra Eco. But these are looking like very different shoes as they are down turned with the Maverink highly asymmetrical. Mad Rock Remora. Slight down turn. Red Chili Amp. Slight down turn. Synthetic upper, so little to no stretch. - Scarpa Instinct S. Slight down turn.
- Boreal Ninja - I've never used this brand so know nothing about them or this model. But looks closer to the Moccasym than the Addict.
With the exception of the Boreal Ninja, all of these appear to be more asymmetric than the Moccasym, some wildly so. So it may or may not fit people in the same way or at all depending on your foot shape.

I wanted to drop a line in this thread to let y'all know that Adidas replaced my moccs in a relatively painless manner. They seem aware there was a poor run of them, and under the impression they've corrected it. I wrote a detailed email providing feedback and Pictures. If your moccs are important to you, give it a shot.

+1 to the comment above. I actually just got new Moccs today (mailed them in and received a new pair back). We'll see how it goes this time.

For what it's worth, mine did the exact same thing, tearing on both shoes in the same place within a week of use. Returned em at REI, explained the issue, went with Miuras and haven't looked back.

I had three pair in a row do that to me, two of which happened at the store while putting them on. I have had many pairs of moccasyms ever since they first came out in 1475. They have definitely gone down in quality as of late. Comparing my old ones the to most recent, the leather is quite a bit thinner and less durable. Lame!

same. Contacted Addidas, said it was a common "material defect" in the split grain leather. I may go deep, but I don't go this deep

I think the main reason they ripped, looking back, was from stepping on the heels before they were broken in. I think the place where they ripped is where they get stressed when you step on the heel. So, if you just wait until they are broken in to step on the heel (or never step on the heel), then they'll probably be fine.

I wonder if they switched leather vendors? Or tried to use lower quality leather?

Bump. Bought a pair of moccs in June 2018, leather split exactly the same within the first 2 weeks. REI replaced them in Nov, 2018. Climbed 2 times before an injury kept me out of them until this past month.
The November pair’s leather tore in the same spot as above last week (plus they also split Above my toes), within 3 weeks of climbing. REI begrudgingly replaced them for me again (telling me they wouldn’t do it again).I’ve climbed in Moccasyms exclusively for approximately 24 years. I run two pair at a time (rotating from outdoor to indoor). I climb frequently and have my whole life and burn through a pair every 9-12 months, so that equates to maybe 30-40 pairs since the late 90s. I can tell you exactly how every other pair I have had wears out, and it is never with the leather ripping. I’m so bummed.
Just started climbing in the new pair yesterday and today. Hoping adidas got this sorted on 2019 models. I’ll be sad to have to change shoes after being so accustomed to moccs.
Anyone notice any improvements with 2019 product?

I bought a pair back in February - it was actually my first pair of Moccs and ended up returning them a couple of weeks ago because they were too small. But in that time I did a decent amount of gym climbing, some hand crack climbing, and some slab routes, and they held up fine. I did try on another pair at the store initially in which the upper felt and looked very different (and cheap), so I may have dodged a shoddy pair at that time.

Well, I won't be returning to Moccasyms anytime soon it sounds like.
